About The Position

This Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Nutrition Education and Obesity Prevention (SNAP-Ed) Nutrition Educator will primarily be responsible for assisting in the delivery of established SNAP-Ed public education programming to improve healthy food and lifestyle choices among families and individuals encompassing all age groups throughout Steuben County. Occasional meetings in Steuben County will also be required. This position will also include assisting with marketing efforts for SNAP-Ed programming in collaboration with other Nutrition Educators in the county. This is a 1.0 FTE grant-funded seasonal position. Funding for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) program is through the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and administered by the Federal Food and Nutrition Services (FNS). May-September 30, 2026.

Requirements

  • Associate’s degree in the field of Nutrition, Health Education or Public Health or equivalent education (GED/High School Diploma and one (1) year transferrable program/functional experience). Working towards bachelor’s degree in the field of Nutrition or equivalent also accepted if 2+ years into degree.
  • Must be dependable, flexible, and organized.
  • Must be a team player and work with a variety of CCE educators.
  • Ability to meet travel requirements associated with this position.
  • Ability to meet acceptable background check requirements.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, which may include evenings and/or weekends, as appropriate.
  • Ability to frequently work in outdoor weather conditions including extreme heat and cold.
  • Ability to frequently carry supplies and equipment, including climbing stairs and/or in natural environment settings with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Ability to clearly communicate (speak, read, and write proficiently) in English.
  • Ability to present effective educational lessons to target audiences and work with diverse audiences of all ages.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Basic computer and word processing skills.
  • Must be able to enter data in a timely manner and maintain logs.

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with the community in which the work will take place and ability to utilize program resources within the community.
  • Familiarity with purchasing and preparing foods.
  • Food safety skills necessary
  • Familiarity with reviewing and following recipes and assure compliance with federal and state guidelines.
  • Ability to plan and organize personal work responsibilities according to priorities developed with the immediate supervisor.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the staff in conducting daily program activities including educational programming (Nutrition, Agriculture in the Classroom, 4-H, Veggie Van, Horticulture)
  • Assist with activities related to the 4-H Summer Showcase such as set up and tear down, helping facilitate shows and contents and other things related to the showcase.
  • Assist staff with maintaining garden at Haverling Community Park – including watering, weeding and general garden oversight.
  • Help Veggie Van farmer set up and tear down and tabling at the Veggie Van for various programs.
  • Frequently travels, transporting self and materials and delivers programs utilizing established approved curriculum at locations based on program need.
  • Provide assistance with 4-H Summer Showcase data entry.
  • Provide assistance with Veggie Van data entry.
  • In cooperation with Supervisor and/or Executive Director, jointly develop and pursue a professional development plan as a means to increase competencies relative to position accountabilities and to address changes and Association priorities.
  • Collaborate in activities that are in general support of Cornell Cooperative Extension and perform other duties as assigned.
  • Support the Association to maintain a safe working environment.
  • Be familiar with and strive to follow any applicable federal, state, local regulations, Association health and safety policy/procedure/requirement and standard.
  • Act proactively to prevent accidents/injuries and communicate hazards to supervisors when identified.
  • Represent Cornell Cooperative Extension to the public, community leaders, colleagues, volunteers, members of Cornell University faculty and staff, government officials and the general public in a professional manner.
  • Aware of, and adheres to, established Cornell Cooperative Extension Association policies, and procedures.
  • Contribute to the overall success of the organization by performing all assigned duties in a professional, timely, and accurate manner.
  • At all times act in a professional Customer Service manner including but not limited to business-like demeanor, tactful communications, cooperative, helpful, positive, and receptive manner.
