About The Position

The Public Safety Officer supports the University of Minnesota Crookston Department of Public Safety by helping to maintain a safe and secure environment for all students, faculty, staff, and visitors. This position performs routine patrols, responds to non-emergency and emergency calls for service, enforces university policies, and provides high-visibility community-oriented assistance. This is a Temporary position reporting to Director of Residential Life, Dave Roberts.

Requirements

High school diploma or GED equivalent
Must be at least 18 years of age
Possession of a valid state driver's license and a clean driving record
Proven ability to pass a comprehensive background investigation
Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with an emphasis on customer service and de-escalation
Ability to work independently and make sound judgments in varied situations
Basic computer skills for reporting and communication
Must be able to work a flexible schedule, including nights, weekends, and holidays

Nice To Haves

Previous experience in security, law enforcement, or military service
Prior experience working in a college or university environment
Current certification in First Aid, CPR, and AED
Familiarity with incident reporting systems

Responsibilities

Conducts patrols of campus buildings, grounds, and parking areas to deter crime, identify safety hazards, and maintain visibility
Monitors campus areas using security cameras (CCTV) and alarm systems
Responds promptly to non-emergency calls for service, such as room lock-outs, and safety escorts
Responds to emergency situations (e.g., medical aids, fire alarms, disturbances) as directed, assesses situations, and requests assistance from supervisors or local emergency services (police, fire, EMS) as needed
Prepares clear, concise, and accurate incident reports and daily security logs
Provides excellent customer service to the campus community, offering directions, information, and general assistance
Performs safety escorts for students and employees upon request
Enforces university policies and regulations, including parking and traffic rules, in a fair and consistent manner
Secures and un-secures academic and administrative buildings at designated times
Assists with crowd control and security for special campus events (e.g., athletic events, guest speakers, commencement)
Performs related duties as assigned by a supervisor
