About The Position

The Public Safety Officer supports the University of Minnesota Crookston Department of Public Safety by helping to maintain a safe and secure environment for all students, faculty, staff, and visitors. This position performs routine patrols, responds to non-emergency and emergency calls for service, enforces university policies, and provides high-visibility community-oriented assistance. This is a Temporary position reporting to Director of Residential Life, Dave Roberts.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent
  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Possession of a valid state driver's license and a clean driving record
  • Proven ability to pass a comprehensive background investigation
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with an emphasis on customer service and de-escalation
  • Ability to work independently and make sound judgments in varied situations
  • Basic computer skills for reporting and communication
  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule, including nights, weekends, and holidays

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience in security, law enforcement, or military service
  • Prior experience working in a college or university environment
  • Current certification in First Aid, CPR, and AED
  • Familiarity with incident reporting systems

Responsibilities

  • Conducts patrols of campus buildings, grounds, and parking areas to deter crime, identify safety hazards, and maintain visibility
  • Monitors campus areas using security cameras (CCTV) and alarm systems
  • Responds promptly to non-emergency calls for service, such as room lock-outs, and safety escorts
  • Responds to emergency situations (e.g., medical aids, fire alarms, disturbances) as directed, assesses situations, and requests assistance from supervisors or local emergency services (police, fire, EMS) as needed
  • Prepares clear, concise, and accurate incident reports and daily security logs
  • Provides excellent customer service to the campus community, offering directions, information, and general assistance
  • Performs safety escorts for students and employees upon request
  • Enforces university policies and regulations, including parking and traffic rules, in a fair and consistent manner
  • Secures and un-secures academic and administrative buildings at designated times
  • Assists with crowd control and security for special campus events (e.g., athletic events, guest speakers, commencement)
  • Performs related duties as assigned by a supervisor
