About The Position

The Temporary Maintenance Technician is responsible for the systematic replacement and labeling of smoke alarms across all Redstone Residential properties in the Rexburg Housing portfolio. This is a project-based position expected to be completed within 90 days, averaging 20-30 hours per week across approximately 1,200 apartment units. The position requires attention to detail, self-direction, and a professional demeanor when working in occupied units.

Requirements

  • Prior experience in maintenance, construction, or a related hands-on trade preferred
  • Ability to work independently and manage a consistent daily workload without close supervision
  • Comfortable working in occupied residential units and interacting with residents professionally
  • Basic knowledge of smoke alarm installation or willingness to be trained
  • Must be able to lift 30+ lbs. and work shifts requiring repeated use of a ladder
  • Valid driver's license preferred, as travel between properties may be required
  • Must be reliable, punctual, and detail-oriented given the time-sensitive nature of the project

Responsibilities

  • Replace smoke alarms in each assigned apartment unit according to the project schedule.
  • Properly label each newly installed smoke alarm with the required unit identifier, date of installation, and any other designated information.
  • Inspect each installation site to confirm the alarm is functioning correctly before leaving the unit.
  • Clean up the work area after each installation, including removal of packaging, dust, and debris.
  • Safely collect and dispose of old smoke alarms in accordance with property and local guidelines.
  • Maintain an accurate daily log of completed units, noting any issues encountered such as wiring concerns, inaccessible units, or alarms requiring non-standard installation.
  • Coordinate with property managers and leasing staff to schedule access to occupied units in a respectful and timely manner.
  • Communicate professionally with residents when entering units, providing brief explanation of the work being performed.
  • Report any unit-level safety concerns or maintenance issues observed during installations to the property manager.
  • Follow all safety protocols when working on ladders or in elevated positions.
  • Participate in any required project briefings or check-ins with the maintenance supervisor.
