About The Position

Odessa Brown Children’s Clinic (OBCC) has locations in Othello and the Central District. Services at the clinics include pediatric medical care, behavioral health, dental services, nutrition, sports medicine, physical therapy, occupational therapy and more. Since 1970, OBCC has worked to uphold the vision of community organizer Odessa Brown: to bring quality healthcare with dignity to children from birth to young adulthood in the Central District and south Seattle. The Lactation Consultant is responsible for providing safe, family centered patient care by assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating lactation plans for the mother-infant breastfeeding dyad, as well as for the pumping mother, and is fully collaborative with the mother, patient, patient's family, significant others, and members of the health care team. The Lactation Consultant demonstrates specialized knowledge and clinical expertise in breastfeeding and human lactation. As an integral member of the Health Care Team, the Lactation Consultant functions within the Scope of Practice as defined by the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners (IBLCE) and follows Standards of Practice as defined by their professional association, International Lactation Consultant Association, and adheres to Seattle Children's policies, procedures, and guidelines of care.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing, OR Bachelor’s of Science in Nutrition or Clinical Dietetics, OR a Bachelor’s Degree in occupational therapy OR physical therapy OR speech language pathology from an accredited university.
  • Minimum two years of clinical experience in a health care setting.
  • Current Washington State nursing license, OR current Washington State license to practice as an occupational therapist OR current Washington State license to practice as a physical therapist, OR current Washington State license to practice as a speech language pathologist, OR registration through the Commission on Dietetic Registration (RD) with certification with the State of Washington within 4 months of hire (DI).
  • Certification as an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) obtained within 12 months.
  • All lactation consultants must maintain current BLS for Health Care Providers at all times. Can be obtained within 3 months of hire.

Nice To Haves

  • BSN or higher nursing degree, OR a Master's Degree in Nutrition, Clinical Dietetics, or Public Health with a nutrition emphasis, OR a Master's Degree in Occupational Therapy OR physical therapy OR speech language pathology from an accredited university
  • Experience as an IBCLC.
  • Pediatric health care experience.
  • Experience in the Maternal-Child Health setting.
  • Understanding of adult learning principles.
