About The Position

This is a diversified and highly responsible, technical, and visible position involving the maintenance of the information technology systems of the City. This includes performing a variety of complex tasks for the IT Director and staff. The employee in this position assists the IT Director with day-to-day computer-related issues so that the IT Director can focus on long-term goals and new technology initiatives to move the City forward. The ideal candidate for this position is detail-oriented and highly organized, and must be able to work effectively with employees at all levels of computer knowledge.

Requirements

  • General knowledge of personal computer technology, including desktops and mobile devices.
  • Basic knowledge of Microsoft Windows, enterprise desktop applications, networking, printer configuration, file sharing, email, and intranet/Internet use.
  • Skill in troubleshooting and problem-solving related to desktop operations, including following and developing troubleshooting procedures.
  • Skill in providing exceptional customer service and technical support to end users by phone and in person.
  • Ability to work patiently with end users of all skill levels in training and problem solving.
  • Ability to communicate clearly, accurately, and concisely, both orally and in writing, with all levels of employees and officials.
  • Ability to organize work, set priorities, meet deadlines, and follow up with minimal supervision.
  • General knowledge of IT security practices.
  • Ability to distinguish between equipment problems and employee training needs.
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with city officials, senior staff, department heads, vendors, and other employees.
  • Ability to deal with the public in a tactful and courteous manner.
  • Ability to exercise mature judgment, discretion, and confidentiality in handling sensitive information.
  • Associate’s degree in Information Technology or a related field preferred.
  • Equivalent experience and/or certifications may substitute for college coursework.
  • Must be willing to obtain CompTIA A+ certification within 12 months of hire.
  • Must be willing to obtain an additional certification specializing in networking, security, server technologies, or similar IT discipline, as required by the IT Director.
  • Must be able to obtain Level 4 Criminal Justice Information System (CJIS) Security & Awareness Training certification.
  • The employee in this position is in constant communication with coworkers, elected officials, and the public, and must be able to communicate clearly and effectively both in person and by phone.
  • The employee must be able to review documents in paper or electronic form.
  • Regularly lifts and/or moves up to 25 pounds and occasionally lifts and/or moves up to 50 pounds.
  • Must be able to use a variety of office equipment and a computer.
  • Must be able to travel to other City locations as needed, and assist the IT Department with networking equipment setup and maintenance.

Responsibilities

  • Receive, prioritize, resolve, and document technical support requests from city employees using the Help Desk knowledge base and related resources.
  • Install, update, and configure city-owned hardware, software, and networking equipment.
  • Monitor and resolve alerts from backup systems, virus protection, and networking equipment in accordance with service level agreements.
  • Create and close user accounts in a Microsoft Windows domain environment.
  • Maintain and update documentation related to IT tasks, processes, and workflows.
  • Maintain hardware and software inventory database, generate reports, and update documentation.
  • Manage data backup and restoration processes to ensure data integrity and reliability.
  • Provide technical support and operate audio/visual and voting equipment during City Council meetings (after hours).
  • Identify opportunities for process improvement and standardization.
  • Monitor and maintain security patching processes, including applying security patches manually when required.
  • Recommend IT security policies and procedures.
  • Provide technical assistance for printer maintenance and repairs.
  • Serve as a project manager and liaison between departments and IT staff to optimize systems for departmental needs.
  • Create use cases and test plans for user acceptance testing to ensure accurate data capture and eliminate redundant or irrelevant data elements.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
