Home and Hospital Teachers are part-time, non-contracted employees who are hired on a per student basis during the academic school year. The Home and Hospital Teaching Program provides temporary instructional continuity to students who are unable to attend their regular school of enrollment because of a physical or emotional issue. Preparing for the eventual return to school, the education services provided enable students to continue their academic work and to remain current with their peers. These positions are very flexible and can range from 1.5 hours a week for one student in one subject to many more students and subjects. Home and Hospital Teachers are required to have a Bachelor’s Degree.

Requirements

  • A minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with students, staff and parents/guardians using HCPSS enterprise systems. (Outlook, Google, Synergy, etc.).
  • Ability to provide virtual instructional sessions with students, schedule instructional sessions efficiently, maintain an organized schedule and adapt to changes as needed.

  • All employees, regular and temporary, must be fingerprinted, have a criminal background investigation completed, and successfully complete the Maryland Employment History Review, pursuant to Section 6-113.2 of the Education Article, Annotated Code of Maryland.
  • In addition, some positions will require completion of a physical examination and/or drug testing.
  • Anyone offered employment is required to provide proper identification and documentation of eligibility for employment in the United States.

Responsibilities

  • Communicate and collaborate with the school teams, classroom teachers, and parents/guardians to provide interim instructional sessions.
  • Provide academic instruction
  • Instruct in the student’s home, in a hospital, in a community setting, virtually, or a hybrid combination to meet the needs of the student.
  • Develop an academic plan for the projected period of time the student will be receiving Home and Hospital interim instructional services
  • Prepare and follow a lesson plan for each instructional session based on the classroom teacher’s HCPSS curriculum.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the subject discipline.
  • Evaluate lessons and activities based on observable outcomes.
  • Plan and provide interim instruction based on the student's needs as identified in their Home and Hospital IEP amendment or 504 to enable the student to progress in the general education curriculum and advance toward achieving their IEP goals.
  • Attend sixty (60) day re-verification, when available, or provide a summary of student progress.
  • Provide and share student grade documents in accordance with HCPSS Policies
  • Complete all necessary documentation and submit instructional hours in a timely manner.
  • Attend HHT meetings and professional learning opportunities.
  • Value the confidentiality of student privacy.
  • Follow all HCPSS policies, procedures and guidelines, including all policies regarding safety and risk management.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
