About The Position

The primary function of this position is to perform master mechanic-level duties in the preventative maintenance, inspection, and repair of fire rescue administrative, supervisory, and operational response vehicles, generators, small engines, and other equipment. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS Performs preventative maintenance, periodic inspections, and repair of fire rescue admin, supervisory, and operational response vehicles, generators, small engines, and other equipment. Performs repairs on all fire department apparatus and equipment, such as engine overhauls, pump repairs, and hydraulic equipment repairs to ensure they will perform under emergency conditions. Assists with repairs, replacements, and overhauls of driveline components, i.e., clutches, transmissions, torque converters, differentials, power dividers, transfer cases, hubs, spindles, etc. Makes minor and major improvements or modifications to new or existing fire apparatus in accordance with departmental needs and specifications. Conducts apparatus pump tests. Maintains and repairs all tools and appliances carried on fire apparatus. Provides guidance and performs repairs on braking systems, including ABS, heavy-duty air brake systems, including manual and automatic slack adjusters, dryers, compressors, valves, regulators, etc. Performs mechanical, electrical, and fluid systems repairs, which may require the use of specialized equipment, including test gages, computer links, scan tools, pyrometers, digital voltmeters, scopes, etc. Tests and diagnoses computer feedback devices, i.e., 02 sensors, TPS, MAPS, knock, and other sensors. Able to perform diesel engine opacity tests. Performs drivability test drives and diagnoses drivetrain and chassis problems. Order parts, supplies, and materials; manage and/or prepare purchase requests. Attends training courses, reads, and studies materials related to fire apparatus and equipment maintenance. Provides training to department personnel on proper apparatus inspection, operation, and minor PM. Performs work in a mobile environment and at department fire stations. May be subject to emergency call-out for emergency repairs outside the normal 40-hour schedule. And for such public business reason, the use of a County vehicle may be deemed an essential part of the job duties described herein. Responsible for personally knowing and following the County’s Personnel Policies and Procedures, Administrative Instructions, Department Operating Procedures, and applicable Statutes and Regulations. Responsible for ensuring others also adhere to these standards. Performs other related job duties as assigned. In the event of special, emergency, or disaster situations, employee may be required to work schedules other than those for which they are regularly scheduled in any capacity deemed appropriate.

Requirements

  • Vocational or Technical School required, or High School Diploma or GED required, with various related work credentials, such as trade-related apprenticeships and/or certifications.
  • Seven (7) to ten (10) years of minimum prior related work experience.
  • Requires a valid Florida Driver’s License.
  • Within nine months of employment, the employee must obtain a valid Commercial Driver’s License Class “B” with all mandated endorsements in order to drive and operate the County fuel tanker truck.
  • Employee must supply and maintain a reasonable amount of their own personal hand tools.
  • This position is subject to the Department of Transportation's mandatory drug testing program, which includes random testing.
  • Ability to oversee, plan, and implement major programs and services for the organization; ability to report on progress to the organization’s executive team.
  • Ability to perform work that encompasses advanced technical, scientific, legal, or mathematical concepts.
  • Ability to make decisions that govern activities of others.
  • Ability to oversee and manage work involving multiple units.
