About The Position

Fisheries Research and Management Division staff are seeking to fill two positions (3 month & 9 month term) to assist with field collection of fish community data, aquatic habitat assessment, and angler use data from reservoirs and lakes across Nebraska. These positions are also anticipated to provide additional support for research efforts at Lake Ogallala, Harlan County Reservoir, and Medicine Creek Reservoir which may involve statewide travel and overnight stays. Fish community sampling techniques include boat electrofishing, trap nets, gill nets and seines. Assist staff with fish age determinations from otolith, scale and spines collected in the field, and subsequent computer data entry. This position will also be expected to assist with equipment maintenance, outdoor education programs and other related responsibilities as assigned. Interactions with the public are common for this position and successful candidates should feel comfortable communicating with aquatic recreation participants.

Requirements

  • 1 year experience OR 1 year coursework/training in fisheries management, natural resources, biology, and/or agriculture
  • 15 semester hours or the equivalent of post high school coursework/training in fisheries management, natural resources and/or biology AND 12 months experience in wildlife, recreation or fisheries management
  • Driver's license required
  • Applicants should possess general knowledge of and ability to operate, care for and repair fisheries equipment and motor vehicles
  • Ability to follow instructions and maintain records
  • General knowledge of fisheries management techniques
  • Applicant should have good speaking and communication skills

  • Preference will be given to candidates seeking a degree in biology/fisheries and wildlife
