About The Position

Free People Movement is seeking Temporary Design support for design and development of private label apparel within our To/From category. This role is integral to bringing product from concept through execution, partnering closely with cross-functional teams to deliver thoughtful, fashion-forward designs. This is role is on site 4-5 days per week for maternity leave coverage beginning in June 2026 for a 3 month duration. Qualified candidates residing outside of a commutable distance to our office in Philadelphia can be offered financial assistance to make themselves local for the duration. The To/From category takes our customer from the studio to the street, encompassing elevated and fashion forward athleisure, heavy knits, fleeces, and statement third pieces. We’re looking for a designer with a strong fashion point of view who understands how to balance performance, comfort, and style while translating trends into new and compelling product.

Requirements

  • Degree in Fashion Design or related field and 4+ Years Design Experience Preferred
  • Ability to identify emerging trends and translate aspirational ideas into commercially relevant product.
  • Experience researching color, print, and fabric direction 9–12 months ahead of season.
  • Strong hand sketching and CAD skills; proficiency in Procreate, Photoshop, and Illustrator.
  • Solid understanding of Cut & Sew knits (jersey) and woven fabrications, applied to fit and design.
  • Ability to drape, mock, and sew.
  • Highly organized and comfortable in a fast-paced environment.
  • Clear communicator with the ability to collaborate cross-functionally with Design, Buying, and partners.
  • Ability to manage multiple styles across various stages of development.
  • Strong balance of creative vision and business needs, delivering cost-effective design solutions.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, and Word.
  • Ability to work on-site at our World Headquarters in Philadelphia, PA 4-5 days per week.

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with AI tools is a plus.
  • Knitwear or sweater experience is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate in the design, development, and execution of own-brand product for the Free People Movement To/From category, ensuring designs align with the brand’s elevated, fashion-forward and unique point of view.
  • Partner cross-functionally with Design, Buying, Technical Design, and Production to support the seasonal development calendar and deliver product on time and to aesthetic intent.
  • Execute assigned design development projects, contributing to silhouette development, fabrication, trim, and artwork with attention to detail and quality.
  • Prepare and manage development packages in partnership with the Design Coordinator, maintaining clear communication and follow-up throughout the process; update and maintain category styles in web PDM.
  • Oversee the development and execution of trim and artwork packages, ensuring consistency with design direction and brand standards.
  • Create and maintain spec sheets for all styles; communicate fit, construction, and design intent to the Technical Design team; complete all technical sketches for both domestic and overseas programs.
  • Actively participate in weekly Design Flow Meetings, documenting decisions, tracking action items, and following up on outstanding issues.
  • Communicate clearly and consistently with internal partners and external vendors, including overseas factories, to support smooth development and execution.
