About The Position

The Cornell Duck Research Laboratory in Eastport, Long Island, New York, is seeking a Temporary Animal Technician to support its ongoing projects and diagnostic efforts. This role involves providing high-quality care for the laboratory’s duck population, contributing to poultry vaccine production primarily for the commercial duck industry. This is a casual appointment, offering less than 19 hours per week from January through July 2026. The hourly pay rate for this position is $20.00.

Requirements

  • High school diploma
  • Ability to work with poultry in dusty environments and lift 50 pounds.
  • Proven ability to understand and follow basic instructions.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Proactive and flexible approach to completing tasks.
  • Ability to cultivate inclusive working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.

Responsibilities

  • Provide daily care for the duck population including feeding, handling, daily checks, with attention to animals.
  • Identify and report emergency situations to clinical staff, ensuring that animals requiring special care are reported to the appropriate investigator.
  • Maintain clean and sanitary animal facilities and equipment in accordance with inspection standards, promptly removing sick or injured birds as needed.
  • Keep accurate records to demonstrate compliance with animal welfare regulations and related legal requirements.
  • Support the development of policies, procedures, and assist with research planning by collaborating with the animal care team to discuss and implement care plans.
  • May be responsible for transport of animals between facilities.
  • Provide basic facility maintenance, including lawn care.
