SUMMARY: The goal of this program is to inspire public high school students who have completed their sophomore year to gain experience that will help them develop a path forward to become the next generation of leaders in cancer research, treatment and prevention. The Student Scholars will shadow some of the nation’s top cancer clinicians and scientists at Rhode Island Hospital, Miriam Hospital and Hasbro Children’s Hospital and at state-of-the-art laboratory research facilities at the Brown University Health Cancer Institute and the Brown Cancer Center. They will see oncology patients in the inpatient and outpatient settings, participate in conferences and in training sessions. PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Brown University Health employees are expected to successfully role model the organization’s values of Compassion, Accountability, Respect, and Excellence as these guide our everyday actions with patients, customers and one another. See patients in the oncology clinic with hematologists and oncologists Work with specialists in the fields of pathology, surgery, radiation, and genetics. Be on time for all sessions generally beginning at 8:30 am Participate in tumor boards and other teaching conferences. Work with respect to all hospital staff and patients. Do outside reading as assigned by cancer specialists. Participate in laboratory training. Performs other duties as assigned.
