The PBX Operator plays a vital role in Ochsner Health’s communication network by answering and routing all incoming calls on the main telephone line. This position ensures that patients, family members, physicians, visitors, and staff receive prompt, courteous, and accurate assistance. The PBX Operator provides information, directions, and general support while upholding Ochsner’s standards for professionalism, service excellence, and patient experience.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Strong customer service and communication skills.
  • Ability to speak clearly, remain calm, and provide helpful service in a fast-paced environment.
  • Basic computer literacy and the ability to learn PBX and paging systems.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior experience as a PBX operator, call center representative, or receptionist.
  • Experience in a healthcare or hospital setting.

Responsibilities

  • Answer all incoming calls to Ochsner Health’s main telephone line in a timely, courteous, and professional manner.
  • Assess caller needs and efficiently route calls to the appropriate departments, clinics, or individuals.
  • Provide clear and accurate information regarding hospital locations, visiting policies, departmental hours, and general inquiries.
  • Assist patients, families, visitors, physicians, and employees with directions and facility navigation.
  • Maintain knowledge of organizational structure, key contacts, and frequently requested resources.
  • Utilize PBX and communication software to handle call transfers, paging, and messaging functions.
  • Follow established scripts, protocols, and service standards to support patient experience initiatives.
  • Respond appropriately to emergency codes, alarms, and critical communications, following established procedures.
  • Document call trends or issues and report equipment or system malfunctions to the supervisor.
  • Protect patient confidentiality and comply with HIPAA and all Ochsner Health policies.
