About The Position

The Telephone Operator at Hackensack Meridian Health plays a crucial role in ensuring effective communication within the hospital. This position involves answering incoming calls, routing them appropriately, and responding to emergencies and alarms. The operator is responsible for maintaining a high level of productivity and accuracy in call handling, while also providing essential information to callers regarding hospital services and procedures.

Requirements

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Proficient computer skills, including Microsoft Office and/or Google Suite platforms.

Responsibilities

• Answers hospital incoming calls within 3 rings.
• Determines the appropriate extension or departmental personnel to connect with the caller through brief screening.
• Uses proper questioning techniques to ensure accurate information is gathered from callers, visitors, and patients.
• Contacts hospital personnel as requested through the paging system.
• Handles calls for physician's on-call according to established procedures.
• Maintains proper record keeping and documentation to ensure productivity.
• Demonstrates knowledge of Medical Center procedures and medical terminology to facilitate accurate routing of calls.
• Furnishes accurate information regarding patient location, visiting hours, and organizational information.
• Keeps callers informed about the status of their calls.
• Operates a data linked multi-position PBX console automated system efficiently and courteously.
• Provides directory information for both internal and external callers through the computer system.
• Responds immediately to all emergencies and alarms, ensuring procedures are followed accurately.
• Manages trauma codes, fires, and disasters using in-house beeper terminal accurately and timely.
• Adheres to HMH Organizational competencies and standards of behavior.
