About The Position

Reports to the Critical Care Manager and/or designated charge nurse. The primary role of the Telemetry Technician is to monitor non-invasive cardiac activity on patients by means of a continuous display of the patient cardiac rhythm and also to monitor patients in the Emergency Department that are in danger of self-harm via closed circuit TV. The technician is able to interpret the rhythm and inform the nursing unit appropriately. Duties also include initiation and discontinuation of telemetry monitoring, and overseeing the pacer phone on off shifts and weekends. Employees providing direct patient care must demonstrate competencies specific to the population served.

Responsibilities

  • Monitors rhythms, sets alarm parameters as directed by nurse or physician, performs arrhythmia analysis.
  • Documents cardiac rhythm strips, rhythm changes and communicates with nurses (e.g. parameter changes).
  • Communicates with nursing units regarding changes in patient telemetry status.
  • Initiates, discontinues, and does troubleshooting of telemetry on patients.
  • Performs 12-lead EKG’s, files print-outs every shift.
  • Monitors battery life on equipment and changes as needed.
  • Applies continuous pulse ox monitors.
  • Documents set up and adverse events related to continuous pulse ox monitoring.
  • Communicates changes in pulse ox regularly to Respiratory Therapist.
  • Acts as concierge to all visitors, providing direction and other information or assistance to facilitate customer satisfaction.
  • Assists with collection of patient data to ensure quality and safety.
  • Attends required in service programs, meetings and seminars.
  • Demonstrates a positive attitude with co-workers and allows for flexibility in meeting the needs of the department.
  • Maintains a working knowledge of applicable Federal, State and local laws and regulations, the Compliance Accountability Program, Code of Ethics, as well as other policies and procedures in order to ensure adherence in manner that reflects honest, ethical and professional behavior.
  • May also monitor other types of equipment as trained, for patient safety.
  • Maintains unsupervised access to the unit medication room(s) for stocking and/or retrieving supplies.
  • Maintains a safe workplace by keeping work area free of hazards and correcting and/or properly reporting any safety hazards.
  • Uses correct body positioning, proper body mechanics to avoid injury, utilizes safe work practices (e.g. pushing vs. pulling, patient transfer/lifting devices, etc.) and uses personal protective equipment when necessary.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.
