About The Position

The telemetry nursing assistant works under the direction and supervision of a Registered Nurse. Under supervision the incumbent is responsible for a variety of cardiac monitoring or nursing assistant and clerical duties as established by the Nurse Manager. The float telemetry nursing assistant’s primary function is to provide continuous cardiac monitoring, interpretation, and documentation of cardiac rate, rhythm, and patterns of conduction for the Inpatient Unit. Primary support is given to the Inpatient Department. Responsibilities include continuous cardiac monitoring and direct and indirect patient care. The telemetry nursing assistance performs accurate and prompt recognition and immediate notification of licensed staff (RN, MD) of any changes from the patient’s baseline in regards to cardiac rhythm, sustained rate changes, vital sign changes, and/or potentially life-threatening dysrhythmias. Provides general clerical support coordination work for the unit. The telemetry nursing assistant is expected to perform additional duties as assigned by the Nurse Supervisor when not assigned to telemetry monitoring.

Requirements

  • High School graduate or GED and successful completion of an accredited program in Nurse Aide.
  • Applicant must have valid North Carolina Nurse Aide I Registry Listing.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS). Can be acquired through the facility following appointment to the position.
  • National Telemetry Association Certification completed within 6 months of hire date.
  • Six months experience in clerical duties, ie, typing, computer use, and filling. Experience can be documented through education or work experiences.
  • Applicant must have a valid North Carolina driver's license.

Responsibilities

  • Admits and discharges patients from telemetry monitor systems.
  • Monitors, interprets and reports data from telemetry monitor systems.
  • Recognizes cardiac rhythm changes from the patient’s baseline and report to licensed staff immediately.
  • Documents rhythm status per unit policy, for all changes and upon request during emergent patient interventions.
  • Reports changes in monitored vital signs including blood pressure, heart rate, and pulse oximetry data to appropriate licensed personnel.
  • Follows procedure for application to patient and troubleshooting monitoring equipment.
  • Respond promptly to all monitor system alarms.
  • Cleans and maintains telemetry monitor equipment.
  • Acts as a unit receptionist, answering phone and call systems.
  • Performs clerical, technical and communication functions as directed by the licensed staff.
  • Initiate Rapid Response or Code as indicated.
  • Assists patients with daily living activities, ie, bathing, oral hygiene, changing bed linen, feeding, etc.
  • Provide nourishment as indicated by physician order.
  • Collects specimens (urine, stool, throat cultures and sputum)
  • Completes finger stick glucose monitoring.
  • Monitors intake and output.
  • Answering the telephone and directing calls to appropriate individual and/or answers routing questions concerning inpatient unit.
  • Initiates the admission process by assembling the admission chart and preparing the chart for patient admission to the inpatient unit.
  • Completes the admission process by transcribing physician orders to the appropriate record, requisitioning laboratory, radiology, or other tests, contacting ancillary medical services as ordered to schedule appointments or arrange patient consultation and arranges meals from dietary.
  • Initiates final disposition of chart from inpatient to medical records department.
  • Schedules follow up appointments, arranges laboratory, radiology, or other tests, and assures discharged patient has transportation. Transfers patient chart to pharmacy to finalize discharge medications.
  • Maintains dietary changes, assures discharge patients have transportation. Transfers patient chart to pharmacy to finalize medications.
  • Documents vital signs and other measurement data to the appropriated record. Maintains inpatient census information.
  • Generates and files patient health summary on admission, maintains inpatient records such as filing laboratory and radiology reports: assures appropriate forms and number of forms, etc.
