About The Position

This position is contingent upon award. The Telehealth Technician (LPN) enables timely, Veteran-centered access to specialty and primary care services via real-time video (CVT/VVC) and store-and-forward technologies at a VA Community Based Outpatient Clinic. Working within the Patient Aligned Care Team (PACT) and under the supervision of an RN/provider, the LPN prepares Veterans for telehealth encounters, operates and maintains telehealth equipment and peripherals, conducts clinical tasks within LPN scope, supports troubleshooting and connectivity, and ensures accurate documentation and privacy in accordance with VA directives and clinical standards.

Requirements

  • 1–2 years of recent ambulatory/primary care or telehealth experience; comfort with computers, audio/video, and EHR workflows.
  • Ability to lift/position telehealth equipment and assist patients; strong customer service and communication skills.
  • Solid clinical skills within LPN scope, including medication safety, specimen handling, and infection prevention.
  • Technical aptitude for operating telehealth platforms and peripherals; ability to troubleshoot common connectivity issues.
  • Team-based communication, de-escalation, and service recovery skills; trauma-informed, culturally competent approach.
  • Strong organization and time management to support access, throughput, and accurate documentation.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior VA/DoD or CBOC telehealth experience; familiarity with VA Video Connect (VVC) and clinic-to-clinic CVT workflows.
  • Proficiency with digital exam peripherals (stethoscope, otoscope, derm camera) and basic network/AV troubleshooting.
  • Certifications such as NHA Certified Clinical Telehealth Professional (CCTP) or equivalent; bilingual skills.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and prepare Veterans for telehealth visits (clinic-to-clinic CVT, VA Video Connect, and other approved platforms); verify identity using two identifiers and obtain/verbalize consent per policy.
  • Room Veterans and complete pre-visit activities: vitals, pain, allergies, medication reconciliation, targeted histories, and standardized clinical reminders.
  • Set up and operate telehealth carts, cameras, microphones, and approved clinical peripherals (e.g., digital stethoscope, otoscope, derm camera, exam camera).
  • Facilitate exam workflows per provider direction, ensuring appropriate visualization, audio quality, and clinical data capture.
  • Perform LPN-level procedures (e.g., immunizations, medication administration per route allowed, EKGs, specimen collection, wound care, ear irrigation) following standing orders and protocols.
  • Provide patient education and whole-health coaching using teach-back; reinforce care plans and follow-up instructions.
  • Escalate clinical concerns to RN/provider; assist with in-clinic emergencies per role (e.g., obtaining crash cart, calling rapid response/911).
  • Perform daily equipment checks, software updates, and log maintenance; ensure batteries are charged and peripherals are functional.
  • Troubleshoot basic network/audio/video issues; collaborate with local/enterprise IT and the distant site to restore service quickly.
  • Execute cleaning, disinfection, and high-touch surface protocols for telehealth equipment between encounters; maintain supply PAR levels.
  • Coordinate with schedulers to ensure template readiness, appropriate appointment types, and Veteran instructions (e.g., fasting, connection tests).
  • Support reminder calls/messages and test calls as needed; minimize no-shows and connection failures.
  • Optimize room utilization and flow to reduce cycle time and support same-day access.
  • Document assessments, clinical reminders, and telehealth encounter details in the VA EHR (e.g., CPRS/Cerner) using approved templates; complete required telehealth-specific fields and encounter forms.
  • Adhere to HIPAA/Privacy, VA telehealth directives, OSHA, infection prevention, and information security standards.
  • Assist with quality assurance (e.g., equipment logs, temperature logs, disinfection logs) and respond to audits/tracers; report safety events and near misses.
  • Completes required organizational compliance education, including assigned requirements that are client-specified, for Joint Commission Healthcare Staffing Services certification or other regulatory bodies.
