About The Position

The City of Yakima is seeking Telecommunicators to handle 9-1-1 calls, dispatch law enforcement and fire resources, and provide emergency medical instructions over the phone. New hires will receive a $5,000 hiring incentive, payable on their first paycheck after the first full month of employment, contingent upon a 36-month repayment contract. This position requires individuals to work 12-hour shifts on a rotating schedule of 2 months on days and 2 months on nights, including weekends and holidays as scheduled. Candidates must pass a series of pre-employment tests, including a typing test, background check, polygraph, hearing exam, and psychological evaluation.

Requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years old at the time of exam.
  • Must pass a typing test with a minimum of 30 WPM net typing speed without error.
  • Must have 18 months of successful employment as a telecommunicator/dispatcher at a high-volume dispatch facility for lateral applicants.
  • Must successfully pass pre-suitability testing, comprehensive background check, polygraph, hearing exam, and psychological evaluation.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of emergency services operations and providers in Yakima County.
  • Strong working knowledge of computer operations, databases, and industry applications including CAD systems and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Ability to interpret maps and learn the roads and streets of the operational area.

Responsibilities

  • Answer emergency and non-emergency requests via multiple communication systems.
  • Evaluate information to determine appropriate jurisdiction and personnel to dispatch.
  • Provide emergency medical dispatch instructions under stressful conditions.
  • Accurately enter and retrieve information into the computer-aided dispatch (CAD) system.
  • Monitor and transmit on various radio channels and maintain the status of units in the field.
  • Maintain operational and confidential department records and files.
  • Operate various electronic equipment including E9-1-1 telephone systems and CAD systems.
  • Process requests for confidential information in accordance with state and federal laws.
  • Participate in public education events and may be required to appear in court when subpoenaed.
