The Telecom Field Operations Technician is responsible for the installation, maintenance, and project support of Southern Company's telecommunications networks, including voice, data, and fiber optics. This role involves troubleshooting, coordinating with contractors, and ensuring compliance with operational standards and service levels.

  • Install and maintain telecommunications transport networks including fiber optics, LANs, and voice systems.
  • Troubleshoot and repair hardware and software associated with telecommunications systems.
  • Coordinate with contractors and vendors for project support and problem resolution.
  • Maintain accurate circuit documentation and equipment inventories for assigned jobs.
  • Install standard software and hardware devices as required.
  • Document fiber optic route information including traces and splice points.
  • Support 24x7 on-call operations and respond to emergency restoration needs.
  • A two-year degree in electronics technology or telecommunications, equivalent military training, or five years of hands-on experience in a related field.
  • Understanding of telecommunications topologies and how they interface.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and repair telecommunications systems and ancillary equipment.
  • Proficient with Optical Time-Domain Reflectometers (OTDRs) and fiber optic splicing.
  • Knowledge of radio communication systems and FCC license preferred.
  • Experience with Optical Ground Wire (OPGW) and All-Dielectric Self-Supporting (ADSS) cables.
  • Familiarity with Preformed Line Products (PLP) and Alcoa splice cans.
  • Experience documenting fiber optic routes and power levels.
