About The Position

This is a creative leadership position for a librarian who is passionate about teens and tweens and excited to design services that are relevant, welcoming, and future-focused. You will have the autonomy to imagine new programs, shape collections, activate spaces, and build meaningful relationships with young people while mentoring staff and collaborating across the organization. This position plays a central role in imagining and delivering innovative services for tweens and teens. Under the strategic leadership of the Youth Services Coordinator, this position leads the day-to-day vision and direction of teen services with significant independence. The role is empowered to bring creativity, initiative, and professional expertise to the work while advancing shared departmental goals and contributing to broader priorities and long-range planning.

Requirements

  • MLS/MLIS from an ALA-accredited program strongly preferred
  • Experience working with youth in a library, educational, or community setting
  • Supervisory or team leadership experience is preferred

  • Knowledge of current best practices in teen and tween services, including principles and guidelines from ALA, YALSA, and related professional organizations.

  • Strong public speaking, presentation, and group facilitation skills for audiences of varying sizes and ages.
  • Supportive and collaborative leadership style with the ability to supervise, mentor, and develop staff and volunteers, including training, coaching, and supporting performance growth.
  • Skill in planning, prioritizing, and managing multiple projects, timelines, and responsibilities with a high degree of independence and initiative.
  • Strong computer skills, with the ability to effectively learn and use PC operating systems, Microsoft Office Suite, and Google Workspace is required.
  • Experience with or strong interest in, creative and emerging technologies such as makerspace tools, media production, coding, digital design, gaming, and hands-on learning is preferred.
  • Ability to learn and teach new technologies.
  • Openness to constructive feedback, professional growth, and continuous learning, along with the ability to both accept and apply direction in support of department goals.
  • This position is subject to the City's Drug and Alcohol Free Workplace Program which includes: pre-employment testing, post-accident testing, reasonable suspicion testing, return to duty testing, and follow-up testing.
  • Valid New Mexico driver's license with acceptable driving record for the past 3 years is required.

Responsibilities

  • Design, implement, and evaluate innovative, interest-driven programs for teens ages 13-18 and tweens ages 8-12, using creative approaches and emerging trends to continually reimagine what youth library services can be.
  • Champion a responsive, high-impact selection of young adult materials that reflects the identities, interests, and curiosities of teens. Exercise professional judgment in selecting, promoting, and evolving the collection using professional reviews, the library's material selection policy, community insight, and usage data.
  • Provide inspiring day-to-day leadership, coaching, and mentorship to Youth Services Clerks, Technicians, volunteers, and assigned staff, supporting their growth and success. Help shape the future of the team by participating in recruitment, hiring, onboarding, skill-building, and continuous coaching.
  • Lead the vision for the Teen Zone as a vibrant, flexible, and highly used destination.
  • Serve as a dynamic ambassador for the library and for young people, building meaningful connections and elevating the visibility of teen and tween services. Creatively promote programs, collections, and services through social media, newsletters, digital storytelling, and in-person outreach.
  • Lead engaging tours, programs, and presentations that introduce new audiences to the library in memorable ways.
  • Manage designated budget areas, making decisions about resource allocation with accountability, responsibility, and innovative thinking to expand and enhance services.
  • Play an active role in department-wide operations, supporting shared service points, team initiatives, and coordinated outreach programs.
  • Keep informed of current trends, technology, and developments affecting librarians through professional reading, education opportunities, and participation in professional organizations. Attends workshops, conferences, and trainings.
