About The Position

General Functions: To be responsible for all teen adventure trips in and out of camp and assist in staff training and development throughout the summer season. This is a seasonal role that runs from May - August, 2026 Pay Range: $900 - $930/week Specific Responsibilities: Assist the Summer Camp Director in planning and carrying out pre-camp and in-service staff training, and creating travel staff survival manuals Responsible for programming all elements of trips including: food ordering and receiving, additional driver as needed, scheduling day trips, resident camp overnights Contributing to the leadership team in evening programs, campfires, and daily/weekly schedules Directly supervise and appraise the teen adventure camp counselors on trips Maintain proper records as required by the Director Coordinate matters of interest in areas of overlapping responsibility while always seeking the best solution for campers and the camp Check in with counselors on trips daily; provide appropriate support and leadership for each counselor Attend all teen adventure camp off-site trips, both day and overnight Perform other leadership duties as assigned when teen adventure camp is not in session Use established system for communication with other camp departments Assist in behavior management escalations when needed and document all events Responsible for the health and welfare of campers/staff on all trips Be able to communicate and work well with other members of the leadership team Qualifications Essential Functions: Be able to assist with the training of all staff Ability to hike with full pack Be able to work and communicate well with a variety of age groups Have visual ability recognize hazards in the camp setting the auditory ability to respond appropriately to those hazards Be able to observe camper and staff behavior in daily camp file, to respond to health and safety concerns, and to deal appropriately with the improper behavior Work Environment: To perform this job successfully an employee must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Qualifications: Experience in a camp setting (experience at programming in a camp setting preferred) Extensive knowledge on camping and backpacking permits, skills, and gear use/maintenance Extensive knowledge of ropes and climbing programming Experience working with peers as an authority figure preferred; supervisory experience a plus Good character Flexibility and maturity, with ability to be self-motivated and work off-site with minimum supervision Ability to relate to peers as well as youth effectively Believe in the values of the YMCA of Silicon Valley as well as the individual worth of the camper Wilderness First Aid or Wilderness First Responder preferred (can be obtained upon hire) CPR and First Aid Certification (can be obtained upon hire) Servsafe food handler certificate preferred.
