About The Position

The Technology Development Manager is a customer-facing technical leader responsible for partnering with field sales to diagnose complex treatment challenges, architect high-value chemical and process solutions, and influence buying decisions across municipal and industrial markets. This role requires a blend of deep water/wastewater process expertise, commercial maturity, and executive-level communication skills, ensuring prospects and customers clearly understand the value of USP’s advanced treatment programs. Candidates must demonstrate a record of leading technical-commercial engagements, shaping solution strategy, and driving measurable customer outcomes.

Requirements

  • Proven ability to manage multiple complex opportunities and priorities with minimal supervision; excels in ambiguity.
  • Deep knowledge of municipal and industrial treatment processes (biological, liquid & vapor phase odor control, chemical/physical) with emphasis on sulfide control, corrosion mechanisms, and safety.
  • Expert-level understanding of treatment chemistries (e.g. peroxide/peracetic acid, nitrates, iron salts, alkalinity control, coagulants/flocculants) and their operational/financial tradeoffs.
  • Demonstrated lab and field experimentation competency; plant-scale implementation and KPI tracking.
  • Working knowledge of chemical storage/feed systems and controls; ability to assess risk and compliance.
  • Exceptional technical, analytical, and commercial acumen; able to convert findings into ROI and total cost of ownership narratives.
  • Executive-ready communication; facilitates cross-functional alignment and mentors junior talent.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Chemical/Environmental Engineering, Environmental Science, or related field; Master’s preferred.
  • 10+ years (preferred 12–15) of progressive experience in water/wastewater treatment, environmental chemistry, or industrial process solutions with direct customer-facing responsibility.
  • Documented success leading technical-commercial engagements that delivered measurable customer outcomes (e.g. compliance, odor/corrosion mitigation, cost/performance improvements).
  • Conference presentations, publications, or industry leadership (e.g. WEF, industrial wastewater focused conference, state wastewater agencies, etc.) demonstrating market credibility and thought leadership.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the primary technical strategist during opportunity development, collaborating with field sales to qualify and advance high-potential accounts.
  • Lead multi-stage solution development: site process analysis, conceptual design, pilots, ROI modeling, and treatment program optimization.
  • Translate advanced chemical and process engineering concepts into clear business value propositions for plant managers, engineers, utilities directors, executives, and procurement leaders.
  • Present technical and commercial recommendations to customer leadership to influence buying decisions and secure long-term program adoption.
  • Maintain expertise in advanced oxidation, odor/corrosion mitigation, redox chemistry, and biological/chemical treatment technologies, including competitive technologies.
  • Lead customer technical workshops, root-cause investigations, and multi-agency discussions on complex odor, corrosion, and compliance issues.
  • Represent USP as a senior expert at regional and national conferences; develop customer-ready technical presentations, white papers, and case studies.
  • Partner with R&D, Applications, and Product Management to guide new product development and prioritize innovation based on market and customer needs.
  • Advise Marketing on value propositions and competitive differentiation to support demand generation and sales enablement.
  • Travel in US & Canada as needed (35%–50%) to support high-impact opportunities, pilots, and implementations.
