About The Position

Montefiore Medical Center's Division of Clinical Pathology is responsible for the laboratory testing of blood, urine, and body fluids for disease diagnosis and health maintenance. Utilizing the latest advances in computer technology, the Division maintains millions of dollars of state-of-the-art automated equipment at its laboratory sites and services hospitals, nursing homes, the Montefiore Medical Group, faculty practices, and voluntary physicians' offices at more than 40 sites. The Technologist Intermediate will perform autopsies under the supervision of Pathology Assistants and/or residents, clean and maintains instruments and supplies in autopsy suites and cutting rooms, and performs laboratory QC. Will be responsible for storing, retrieving, and disposing of surgical, neuropathology and autopsy tissue and will assist Neuropathologist during brain cutting sessions, prepare tissue for conferences, and accession surgical pathology and autopsy cases into the Pathology Laboratory Information System. This position is in the Surgical Pathology lab. The hours are 9:00am – 5:30pm Monday through Friday. Montefiore Medical Center is an equal employment opportunity employer. Requirements

  • Associate degree required, Bachelor’s Degree preferred - biological, medical, or forensic science
  • General understanding of surgical pathology cutting room policies and procedures, Detailed knowledge of autopsy policies and procedures required
  • Working knowledge of correct and safe operation of all equipment used in surgical pathology Cutting Rooms and autopsy suites is required
  • Basic human anatomy, safe handling of laboratory equipment and chemicals
  • Must have experience working with Lipshaw Body lift transport system, Scales (Electronic and Manual), Microwave, Graduate cylinder, Standard autopsy saw (Stryker autopsy saw), Surgical instruments (scissors, scalpel blades and handle, probes, forceps, etc.), Cassette labeling machine Leica IPC Cassette labeler machine, Digital camera, Electric Bone saw, (Band saw), current laboratory Information System, Cryostat

Responsibilities

  • Perform organ evisceration, brain, and spinal cord removal in autopsy cases
  • Review patient chart and consent form prior to autopsy commencing
  • Perform time-out procedure in the presence of the resident or PA prosector
  • Accessions autopsies and surgical specimens in the pathology Laboratory Information System
  • Transport laboratory materials (slides, blocks, tissues etc.) from storage to areas where they will be used (attending offices, cutting rooms, etc.) and back again
  • Participate in quality control
  • Assist neuropathologist with weekly brain cutting sessions
  • Transport autopsy and surgical specimens from cutting rooms to storage areas or to morgue for disposal
  • Maintain autopsy suite and cutting room inventory and surgical pathology cutting rooms and autopsy suites
  • Label and files Neuropathology slides
  • Dispose of tissue and chemical waste in the cutting rooms and autopsy suites
  • Cover, at any campus, other staff with the same or lower responsibilities (Intermediate Techs, Clerks, Lab helpers)
  • Perform other functions within their job description as needed and not specified elsewhere
