About The Position

Technician – System Protection (T &D Technical Services Department) PowerSouth Energy Cooperative , headquartered in Andalusia, AL, is a generation and transmission (G&T) electric cooperative with 22 distribution members – 18 electric distribution systems and four municipal electric systems – in Alabama and northwest Florida. PowerSouth's member systems provide power to end-use consumers across 51 counties in Alabama and 10 counties in Florida. JOB SUMMARY & MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: The purpose of this position is to calibrate, troubleshoot and perform maintenance and installation of protective schemes and equipment on the PowerSouth transmission system. Candidates must demonstrate a potential for success in the Technician – System Protection Training program by qualifying on an aptitude-based placement exercise and a behaviorally based structured interview. The incumbent must possess an Associate degree in Industrial Electronics or related field. The applicant must possess a valid driver's license and be able to obtain a DOT medical certification card.

Requirements

  • Candidates must demonstrate a potential for success in the Technician – System Protection Training program by qualifying on an aptitude-based placement exercise and a behaviorally based structured interview.
  • The incumbent must possess an Associate degree in Industrial Electronics or related field.
  • The applicant must possess a valid driver's license and be able to obtain a DOT medical certification card.

Responsibilities

  • Performs maintenance and testing of protective relaying and control equipment along with associated equipment (CTs and PTs) and performs troubleshooting of protective relaying and other control schemes (such as MODs).
  • Provide routine inspection and care of substation batteries including replacing batteries as required.
  • Install protective relay equipment including the wiring and installation of protective relay panels, pulling control cable, and providing assistance with the performance of acceptance tests of relays and other associated equipment such as current and potential transformers.
  • Perform commissioning tests on new installations.
