About The Position

We have multiple openings for entry-level Mechanical Technician s . You will provide basic technical support while applying fundamental knowledge of the fabrication, assembly, installation, and operation of system technologies, utilizing common, well-understood methods. You will interact with supervisors and coworkers and report daily to the supervisor or lead technician. Working under close supervision or lead technician oversight, you will provide technical support that may include, but is not limited to, equipment setup and operation, general troubleshooting and maintenance, minor modification of basic hardware, software, and systems, as well as data collection, rudimentary analysis, and reporting of results. Some overtime and occasional travel may be required to meet program goals. These positions are in the Materials and Non-Destructive Evaluation (MNDE) Section within the Materials Engineering Division (MED). These positions require full-time on-site presence due to the nature of the work.

Requirements

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship.
  • Associate degree in engineering, mechanical, industrial, or manufacturing technology, or the equivalent combination of education and related experience, or a technology-related certificate or diploma with related work experience and related coursework, or an equivalent combination of education and experience in a technical or engineering field that includes mechanical training.
  • Ability to participate in general on-the-job training, such as operational or equipment training.
  • Basic understanding of mechanical fabrication technologies and processes.
  • Basic skills using hand and power tools.
  • Ability to work in a team environment to solve challenges.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and follow technical documentation.
  • Experience with personal computers and software (Microsoft Office), with effective written and verbal communication skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with hardware fabrication and repair processes and equipment maintenance.
  • Experience operating machine tools (drill press, band saw, mill, and lathe).
  • Experience reading and interpreting mechanical drawings.

Responsibilities

  • Provide basic technical support to staff, applying basic knowledge of mechanical equipment operations and maintenance.
  • Participate in general on-the-job mechanical operations and equipment training.
  • Perform basic mechanical equipment and system testing.
  • Collect data using fundamental knowledge of mechanical testing methods.
  • Follow written and verbal operational and safety procedures.
  • Maintain a safe, clean, and functional laboratory environment.
  • Perform all assignments in accordance with ES&H, security, and business practice requirements and policies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
