About The Position

You’ll play a critical role in keeping our Durham campus running safely and reliably. As a Technician II in Utility Operations, you’ll operate and maintain essential utility and facility systems while supporting a 24/7 manufacturing environment. You’ll respond to equipment alarms, troubleshoot complex issues, and work closely with Engineering, Automation, Quality, Manufacturing, and Metrology to ensure compliant operations in current Good Manufacturing Practice (cGMP) and cleanroom settings. Your technical skill and ownership directly strengthen equipment reliability, product quality, and the impact we make for patients.

Requirements

  • Associate’s Degree, or Certification in Engineering Technology, with 2 years of relevant experience. OR High School Diploma required; with 4 years of relevant work experience.
  • Experience with utility, heating, ventilation, and air‑conditioning, or electrical systems in regulated environments such as biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, hospitals, universities, government, nuclear facilities, or semiconductor settings.
  • Experience with Building Management Systems, Computerized Maintenance Management Systems, and predictive maintenance technologies.
  • Hands‑on background in maintenance operations, engineering support, equipment installation or service, or instrument calibration or programming.
  • Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings, electrical schematics, hydraulic and pneumatic diagrams, and piping and instrumentation diagrams.
  • Strong troubleshooting and critical‑thinking skills with the ability to assess issues and make sound, independent decisions during second‑shift operations.
  • Ability to meet physical requirements, including, but not limited to – lifting up to 50lbs and climb ladders.

Nice To Haves

  • Licensure in Electrician, Refrigeration/Air Conditioning, Plumbing, Stationary Engineer, Boiler Operations, or Wastewater Treatment.

Responsibilities

  • Operation of site-based utility, electrical, HVAC, and facility systems; including water-for-injection, water pre-treatment, chillers, boilers, compressed gases, plant steam/condensate, wastewater, biowaste inactivation, air handling units, cold rooms, switchgear, emergency generators, cooling towers, fire protection, and control systems supporting 24/7 manufacturing operations.
  • Install, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair of motors, pumps, valves, filters, compressors, switches, elastomers, dampers, fans, piping, transmitters, vessels, safety devices, and other components.
  • Perform corrective, preventive, and predictive maintenance to ensure safe, compliant equipment performance.
  • Diagnose and resolve equipment issues; lead initial alarm response and coordinate system owner notifications.
  • Collaborate with Engineering, Automation, Quality, Manufacturing, Metrology, and Validation to maintain reliable operations.
  • Complete accurate, compliant documentation and uphold audit‑ready standards in current Good Manufacturing Practice environments.
  • Oversee external service providers supporting equipment, building infrastructure, security, cleaning, waste management, and repairs.
  • Plan and execute improvements, repairs, asset replacements, and safe shutdown and start‑up activities.
