About The Position

The Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences (VMBS) is an institution that represents 100 years of growth from a small school of veterinary medicine in 1916 to its present role as a major veterinary educational, medical, and research center. Today, we are one of the largest schools of veterinary medicine in the United States, training nearly 600 Doctor of Veterinary Medicine students each year. We support collaboration and teamwork that turns today's discoveries into proactive solutions for animals, humans, and the environment. Together, we strive to support the goals of the faculty, staff and students in teaching, research and outreach programs. The Technician I assists in planning research on support laboratory methods and techniques, carrying out procedures, and recording results for a series of closely-controlled experiments.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or any equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Two years of laboratory, technical or related experience

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field
  • One year in scientific research, clinical, operational or experimental work.
  • Two years of related experience in BSL2 laboratory activities and quality assurance/quality control in the clinical microbiology laboratory.

Responsibilities

  • Performs general functions of the laboratory
  • Sets up sample submissions to appropriate protocol for request, records sample submissions, and assigns a lab number.
  • Performs bacterial identification and susceptibility testing, PCR, and DNA extraction.
  • Performs immunologic assays on submitted patient samples.
  • Communicates test results to clinician or student.
  • Enters hospital fees into the hospital computer information system.
  • Maintains accurate medical records.
  • Enters test results into the hospital computer information system.
  • Assists Microbiologist with teaching duties.
  • Orders supplies for the lab.
  • Performs general laboratory maintenance.
  • Helps maintain and operate laboratory equipment.
  • Provides back-up support for other technicians in Clinical Microbiology laboratory
