About The Position

Under general supervision, performs responsible and varied technical work that permits some choice of procedures and some independence of actions in the disposition of routine matters, as it relates to grounds maintenance.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent with ability to read, write, perform basic arithmetic, and follow verbal and written instructions required; additional specialized or technical training courses preferred.
  • At least one to three years of related work experience required.
  • Computer experience using Microsoft Office or comparable applications required. Computer Skills Level II required - able to use the telephone, voicemail, and email; able to manage files and perform basic functions with the current operating system; able to create, format, edit documents and spreadsheets. Certification as Microsoft Office Specialist in appropriate applications or demonstrated equivalent skills required.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills required.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in English required; ; ability to communicate in other languages desirable.
  • Valid State driver's license required.
  • Physical examination - successfully passed a recent examination required.
  • Full range of motion required. Ability to lift 50 pounds or greater occasionally.

Nice To Haves

  • Valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) desirable.
  • Illinois Pesticide Public Operators License (or willing to obtain).
  • ability to communicate in other languages desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Performs tasks common to the care of grounds and landscapes by seeding, watering, mulching, and fertilizing; uses power equipment in maintaining the grounds and roadways of all college campuses for mowing, trimming, weeding, street sweeping.
  • Performs regular and directed grounds and landscape maintenance by mowing lawns with riding or push mowers; trimming and edging around trees, shrubs, ground cover, flowers, sidewalks and buildings, weeding, thinning, and cleaning flower beds and other grounds by hand or utilizing proper tools and equipment; setting up, adjusting, repairing, and cleaning irrigation systems.
  • Operates equipment to aid in the snow removal, which consist of plowing and salting of campus roadways and parking lots.
  • Maintains, repairs, and services all equipment along with keeping inventory of parts and equipment.
  • Under direct supervision applies appropriate chemicals (fungicides, fertilizers, pre-emergent, e.g.) to the golf course, ball fields and other turf on campus where needed.
  • Maintains trees and shrubs by watering, fertilizing, pruning, straightening, and replanting as needed
  • Performs maintenance on college vehicle fleet; maintains accurate records of services and repairs made
  • Maintains an inventory and maintenance spreadsheet.
  • Assists with graduation or other event setup, may run errands, or make deliveries as needed.
