Clarity ConsultantsCampbell, CA
3d$60 - $65Remote

About The Position

We're seeking an experienced Technical Writer with a strong training and operations background to develop field services training manuals for oil and gas industry equipment. This role focuses on creating clear, accurate, and instructionally sound materials that support both trainers and technicians in classroom and field environments. Ideal candidates bring hands-on operational experience combined with the ability to think and communicate like a learning professional. This role is remote with occasional travel (typically once every few months for approximately one week). Candidates may be located anywhere in the U.S.

Requirements

  • Proven experience writing training manuals for oil & gas equipment or adjacent high-reliability industries such as nuclear, military, utilities, aviation, or manufacturing.
  • Demonstrated experience creating trainer-facing and learner-facing materials for instructor-led, blended, or field-based training.
  • Strong ability to interpret technical documentation and operational procedures and translate them into effective training content.
  • Background as a trainer, operator, or field professional with the ability to “speak the language of learning,” not just technical documentation.
  • Excellent writing, organization, and attention to detail.
  • Experience working directly with SMEs and field-based teams.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience as a nuclear operator, military operator/trainer, or technical instructor in safety-critical environments.
  • Field services, maintenance, or operations background.
  • Familiarity with instructional design methodologies and adult learning principles.
  • Experience with structured documentation standards and content governance.

Responsibilities

  • Develop comprehensive Trainer Guides, Student Guides, and Verification/Assessment Guides for equipment and field services training.
  • Translate complex technical, mechanical, and operational content into clear, usable, and instructionally effective training materials.
  • Apply adult learning and instructional design principles to ensure materials support knowledge transfer, skill development, and safe performance.
  • Partner closely with SMEs, field service engineers, and trainers to gather, validate, and refine content.
  • Create step-by-step procedures, job aids, checklists, diagrams, and troubleshooting content aligned to real-world field conditions.
  • Ensure all materials align with safety standards, regulatory and compliance requirements, and industry best practices.
  • Manage updates and revisions based on equipment changes, operational feedback, and continuous improvement input from the field.
