About The Position

SWCA Environmental Consultants (SWCA) is seeking an Editing Intern for summer 2026 to support our nationwide Technical Publications Team. This is a paid, temporary position (40 hours/week) starting in early June and ending in mid-August. The position is fully remote, though if an individual lives near one of our offices, they are welcome to work from an office. The purpose of the Technical Publications Team is to ensure clear, technically sound language and efficient navigation in environmental deliverables. This position is ideal for students or recent graduates interested in technical editing, document management, and environmental consulting. The position also includes regularly scheduled presentations by SWCA leaders. Hourly Rate: $19.00/hour. Applicants are encouraged to apply as soon as possible. Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in a college or university, pursuing a bachelor’s degree in English, communications, environmental science, or a related field; or a recent graduate (within 12 months of May 1, 2026). Applicants that are pursuing a master's degree will also be considered. Ph.D. candidates are not eligible for this position.
  • Reliable internet connection and ability to work effectively in a remote environment.
  • Excellent understanding of grammar, punctuation, and composition.
  • Strong attention to detail and interest in technical editing.
  • Ability to work efficiently and collaboratively in a fast-paced, virtual team.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word and basic familiarity with other Microsoft 365 programs.
  • Willingness to learn new editing and document management tools.
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure and meet tight deadlines.
  • Professional attitude, curiosity, and a desire to learn.

Nice To Haves

  • Candidates who have completed at least their junior year college or university are highly preferred.
  • Coursework or experience in editing, writing, or environmental studies.
  • Experience with collaborative editing platforms (e.g., SharePoint, Google Docs, Microsoft Teams).
  • Familiarity with PDF creation and document management practices.
  • Interest in environmental consulting or technical writing.

Responsibilities

  • Learn about the collaborative process we follow to create technically sound, scientifically defensible documents for environmental and infrastructure projects.
  • Support editing and formatting of a variety of technical documents (reports, proposals, tables, graphics, appendices) for clarity, consistency, grammar, and adherence to SWCA/client style guidelines.
  • With guidance, apply standard formatting and prepare PDFs for delivery to clients.
  • Assist with document management tasks, including version control, reference formatting, and file organization.
  • Effectively communicate with team members, authors, and project managers in a timely and clear fashion.
  • Learn SWCA’s in-house and client style guides and apply them to project deliverables.
  • Participate in virtual team meetings and training sessions, including opportunities to learn about proposal development and various aspects of environmental consulting.
  • If interested, assist with basic scheduling tasks for document production and delivery.
