About The Position

Google's projects, like our users, span the globe and require managers to keep the big picture in focus while being able to dive into the unique engineering challenges we face daily. As a Technical Program Manager at Google, you lead complex, multi-disciplinary engineering projects using your engineering expertise. You plan requirements with internal customers and usher projects through the entire project lifecycle. This includes managing project schedules, identifying risks and clearly communicating them to project stakeholders. You're equally at home explaining your team's analyses and recommendations to executives as you are discussing the technical trade-offs in product development with engineers. Using your extensive technical and leadership expertise, you manage various Engineering-specific programs and teams. In this Technical Program Manager (TPM) Manager role you will oversee a regional team of Cable TPMs responsible for fiber-optic submarine cable construction projects for the Global Submarine Networks team. You will determine regional project assignments and prioritize activities to align with network capacity demands and sales opportunities. You will lead vendor engagements for all regional work and develop strategies for evaluating and improving vendor performance. You will collaborate with other regional leads to refine global processes, including cross-functional engagements with legal, financial, logistics and compliance organizations. You are a trusted expert on subsea cable technologies, actively contribute to Google's subsea policy formation, and advocate for technological advancements.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 8 years of experience in program management.
  • 5 years of experience in leadership role with/without direct reports.
  • Experience in the subsea cable industry, including marine and terminal equipment engineering and installation.

  • 10 years of subsea cable industry experience, including marine and terminal equipment engineering and installation.
  • 8 years of experience managing cross-functional/team projects.
  • Experience with cable permitting and environmental assessments.
  • Experience in project management, including MS Project and Workfront packages.
  • Experience driving organizational change such as adoption of new tools and processes.
  • Experience with contract negotiation, and with standard terms and conditions, negotiation strategies.

Responsibilities

  • Manage, lead and grow a team of Technical Program Managers for the region.
  • Guide and continually optimize strategic and complex programs, reaching beyond your immediate organization to drive consistency, efficiency and economies of scale.
  • Review and validate cable engineering decisions for routes, protection, landing point selections, shore-end solutions and marine installation methods.
  • Collaborate with vendors on permit acquisition strategies, including application processes and risks. Develop mitigations, assess schedule impacts and drive the process to permit acquisition.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure the readiness of cable landing stations, fronthaul, backhaul and beach infrastructure to support cable installation.
