We are growing and in need of a Technical Manager for our VSS International, Inc. facility. The VSSI Technical Manager encourages and promotes the development of new and emerging technologies which enhance the bottom-line performance of the Company through increased use of Company’s equipment and plant resources. The VSSI Technical Manager will be engaged in all facets of construction and materials manufacturing activities with oversight and direction to company’s lab facilities and testing procedures. The VSSI Technical Manager will participate in trouble shooting activities and professionally represents organization within industry.

  • Engages to understand the strengths and opportunities of VSS’ construction operations and seeks to enhance operations through the introduction of innovations and emerging technologies.
  • Works closely with VSS’s emulsion plant teams to understand capabilities and better efficiencies through the introduction of innovations and emerging technologies.
  • Always seeking new products and techniques which will enhance the Company’s bottom line performance.
  • Provides oversight to VSS’ Laboratories and all field and plant testing procedures.
  • Troubleshoots to assist others with resolution when problems occur.
  • Adheres to all company, local, and federal procedures, guidelines, and rules regarding the protection of self and plant staff.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions based on the best information available, and communicate that information to those that need to know.
  • Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
  • Manage the process of designing, organizing, and implementing a quality control plan.
  • Oversees the performance of Quality Control Testing of asphalt, emulsions and associated materials as assigned.
  • Comply with all safety policies, procedures and established safe practices.
  • Ability to work with limited supervision and manage and coach a group of 2-3 employees.
  • Maintain up to date knowledge of all governing specifications for various State and local agencies.
  • Keep a written daily log of activities and observations and report in writing to management as required.
  • Perform sampling, processing, and testing materials used in the production of Emulsions in accordance with AASHTO, ASTM, DOT, and FAA.
  • Communicate with Plant Operators, Field Superintendents, agency officials and engineering representatives, as necessary, in a professional manner.
  • Prepare and maintain Daily Progress Reports, QC Charts, and testing records.
  • Evaluate test results and communicate with Lab Technicians to assist with maintaining compliance with specifications, including mixture blend changes.
  • Perform maintenance and calibration of lab testing equipment and document findings.
  • Observe and record activities of outside testing agencies and contractors as they relate and affect both the quality of finished products.
  • Ensure all employees under your purview keep current with certifications in the various states the company conducts business.
  • Identify problems, gather, and analyze information and make appropriate recommendations.
  • Oversee the maintenance and certification of lab equipment.
  • Maintain a clean and orderly work area and meet other housekeeping needs as required.
  • 4-year degree preferred or a minimum of five years’ directly related experience in the paving and/or pavement preservation industry; or an equivalent combination of education and directly related experience.
  • Proficient computer skills and familiarity with Windows Microsoft Office.
  • Ability to read and understand engineering specifications and drawings.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, supervisors, and customers.
  • Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as statistics, PWLs and geometry to determine trends.
  • Ability to apply concepts such as fraction, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
  • Must possess a valid Driver License.
  • Willing and able to obtain certifications in all those states within 1 year.
