About The Position

Technical Manager, Podcast & Audio Operations The Wall Street Journal is looking for a proactive, seasoned audio professional to lead our audio engineering, video podcast production, and studio operations. In this role, you will oversee our technical infrastructure—from software and feeds to studio expansions—while spearheading technical training across the newsroom. You will partner with Facilities and Video Engineering to maintain and expand our studios in New York, Washington, San Francisco, and London. As a key collaborator with Live Events and Video, you will ensure seamless production integration and provide expert coaching to talent, troubleshooting technical hurdles to guarantee a world-class audience experience. You will also be the guardian of production best practices, equipping our journalists with the training and tools necessary to capture high-quality sound. Join a growing, ambitious unit that collaborates across the WSJ to produce factual, news-driven podcasts covering business, tech, politics, and finance. You will help define and execute the "WSJ Sound," with ample opportunity to contribute to show production and original composition. This position is based in our New York City office and reports to the Head of Audio. It's a hybrid role, 3 days in office.

Requirements

  • 8+ years of technical experience in daily podcasting or radio, ideally within a news environment.
  • Expert proficiency in Adobe Audition, Pro Tools, Premiere, and Descript, with the ability to train others.
  • A deep interest in the Journal’s core coverage areas (Business, Finance, Tech).
  • Proven experience in product development and launching new multimedia initiatives.

Responsibilities

  • Manage a team of staff and freelance audio engineers.
  • Equip and staff all projects, creating production timelines to ensure every show meets its deadline.
  • Oversee studio scheduling, hardware inventory, RSS feeds, and software ecosystems.
  • Strategize budgets and provide recommendations for new equipment and software upgrades.
  • Monitor audio quality across the slate, proactively resolving technical issues.
  • Maintain and account for all studio equipment to ensure 24/7 working order.
  • Mix, master, and edit shows, promos, and video content.
  • Curate the WSJ music library , composing new themes, stingers, and interstitials to keep our sound fresh.
  • Establish and evolve mix and mastering standards to maintain high production values.
  • Partner with Apple, Spotify, and internal Product teams to ensure technical quality and timely delivery.
  • Manage all technical training for Audio staff and lead initiatives to turn journalists into confident podcasters.
