Performs a variety of duties to support the receipt, processing, testing, delivery and distribution of lab results. May perform a variety of laboratory procedures, including phlebotomy, capillary puncture and other specimen collection processes.
Complies with all Kaiser Permanente quality, safety, and emergency policies and procedures.
Demonstrates quality and effectiveness in work habits and clinical practice in every interaction with patients, colleagues, providers, and leadership.
Ensures patient safety in the preparation and provisioning of care related to medications, procedures, infection prevention, and fall prevention.
Reports safety hazards, accidents and incidents, and unsafe working conditions promptly.
Demonstrates knowledge of specimen collection processes.
Proficient with computer systems and multiple software programs as required.
Follows established procedures for patient identification, specimen collection and labeling.
Maintains and completes all required documentation.
Receives and processes all incoming specimens.
Assesses specimen integrity and prepares, packages and arranges for transport of specimens.
Processes specimens to include racking, creating worklists and loading instruments.
Performs maintenance on equipment and is responsible for equipment startup and shutdown.
Answers and assists with routine telephone inquiries in a courteous and professional manner.
Successfully completes the required laboratory orientation, training, competencies and on-going education as assigned.
Performs waived and moderate complexity testing according to established laboratory procedures.
Enters test results into the LIS for waived and moderate complexity testing.
Communicates and documents results, including alert values to clinical staff.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Completion of an accredited phlebotomy training program and successful completion of a phlebotomy externship of at least 80 hours within a four week period within the last year.
Completion of an accredited phlebotomy training program and two (2) years of previous concentrated phlebotomy experience.
Completion of a Medical Assistant program that includes phlebotomy training and a minimum of six (6) months of concentrated phlebotomy experience within the past three (3) years.
High school graduation or General Education Development (GED) equivalent.
Registered Phlebotomy Technician (AMT) within 12 months of hire OR Phlebotomy Technician Certificate within 12 months of hire from American Society for Clinical Pathologists OR Certified Phlebotomy Technician (ASPT) within 12 months of hire.
