As defined by the American College of Surgeons, the Surgical First Assistant is a trained individual who is able to participate in and actively assist the surgeon in completing the operation safely and expeditiously, providing aid in exposure, hemostasis, and other technical functions that will help the surgeon carry out a safe operation with optimal results for the patient. The role of the Surgical First Assistant is vital to the operating room and any surgical case within the operating suite. The Surgical First Assistant provides immediate support to the surgeon and should be knowledgeable, well-rounded, helpful, and supportive with a team-like attitude.
