Position Title Technician II – Quality Chemical Lab (S00575) Job Summary: The Technician II – Quality Chemical Lab performs a range of moderately complex tasks involving the preparation and chemical analysis of steel, alloy, and slag specimens. The role requires working knowledge of sample‑preparation machinery, chemical testing methods, and laboratory instrumentation. Responsibilities include preparing specimens, conducting analyses using combustion and fusion instruments, operating optical emission spectrometers, inspecting sample quality, maintaining equipment, entering and managing samples in the LIMS system, and reviewing analytical data with appropriate statistical corrections. Work is performed under moderate supervision in support of internal customers.

Requirements

  • High school diploma required.
  • One to two years of relevant laboratory experience.
  • Six months of experience as a Technician I required.
  • Ability to operate and maintain chemical lab equipment.
  • Ability to use computer systems associated with LIMS, LECO units, and spectrometers.
  • Strong organizational and decision‑making skills.
  • Ability to work in a production‑oriented environment with or without direct supervision.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 40 lbs.
  • Mechanical aptitude for routine maintenance and minor repairs.

Nice To Haves

  • Additional relevant experience preferred.
  • Associate degree in Chemistry or two years of physical science coursework preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare steel, alloy, and slag specimens using abrasive saws, sanders, grinders, and drill presses.
  • Inspect test specimens for quality and request replacements when needed.
  • Perform chemical analyses using C/S combustion instruments, N/O fusion instruments, and optical emission spectrometers.
  • Conduct routine and corrective maintenance on preparation equipment and spectrometers, including sludge removal, dust collection cleaning, drill‑bit sharpening, and abrasive replacement.
  • Register, track, and manage samples in the electronic LIMS system.
  • Apply type corrections and statistical adjustments to analytical results based on certified reference materials.
  • Retain or discard samples according to SOP requirements.
  • Perform other duties and special projects as assigned.
