About The Position

Passionate about technology, you will cover the sector for a global audience across all its dimensions, with a special focus on artificial intelligence, big tech, and the Silicon Valley ecosystem, as well as an eye on the video game industry and new mobility. A spirit of initiative is essential in this role, along with genuine curiosity about emerging developments. You will be expected to break news on fast-moving stories, propose original angles, and cultivate a solid network of sources, attending events in San Francisco and Silicon Valley. Teamwork is central to the position. You will work in close coordination with your Frenchspeaking counterpart in San Francisco, the senior English-speaking tech journalist based in Washington, and the French-speaking AI specialist in New York — forming a fourperson “new technologies” unit. Beyond that, you will be part of the broader economic team in North America, contributing to general economic coverage and available to report on other topics along the West Coast of the United States. Big tech and AI’s growing presence in global political debates — along with the increasing alignment of major tech figures with the Trump administration — will require you to keep an eye on the political dimension of the tech world, though the bulk of this coverage is handled from Washington. You will cover the quarterly earnings of the major tech companies, and your vacation schedule will need to take this calendar into account. You will also be asked to translate stories filed by your French-speaking colleagues. You are highly motivated and proactive, bringing fresh story ideas and angles to the team, with breaking news always the first priority. You are a strong collaborator but equally capable of starting the day — or a story — on your own. You will report to the regional editor-in-chief and their deputy in Washington. You will be expected to maintain strong coordination across formats — photo, video, and infographics — and to ensure diversity is reflected in our content. You will keep AFP’s planning platform, Iris 360, up to date so that clients and the Agency can best anticipate scheduling and coverage, linking your output to the relevant events. You will closely monitor social media and strictly adhere to the Agency’s guidelines on social media activity. You will contribute to the fight against disinformation by working with factcheckers in the network, developing skills in the various methods of online verification, now indispensable for all journalism. As a general rule, you must ensure the reliability of our news coverage and commit to respecting AFP’s ethics charter as well as all the editorial guidelines in force and the AFP Stylebook. Hours are flexible, with days often running long. You will take part in the evening shifts that are shared among the economic journalists based in DC, New York, and San Francisco. In an ever-changing media environment, the nature of the job could evolve in line with coverage demands and the requirements of an increasingly diverse client base.
