About The Position

The Odyssey School of Denver is a diverse, K-8 Expeditionary Learning (EL) charter school. We believe in teaching students how to learn through a focus on academic achievement, critical thinking, and social responsibility, preparing them for high school and beyond. Our EL curriculum is supported by a robust outdoor Adventure program in which all students and staff participate. K/1 Teaching Assistants support Crew Lead Teachers in implementing the educational program of the Odyssey School of Denver. K/1 Teaching Assistants spend their time supporting one kindergarten and one first grade classroom each day with small group instruction, teaching cooperative play during recess times, supervising lunch, and supporting their crew lead teachers in other tasks. We are hiring TWO Teaching Assistants.

Requirements

  • Must be a self-aware, mission-driven, solutions-oriented, team player looking to become an expert learner.
  • Commitment to outdoor education and adventure programming for students.
  • At least one year of experience working with elementary-age students

Responsibilities

  • Support social-emotional growth and learning inside and outside the classroom and teach cooperative play and problem solving on the playground.
  • Help to manage and enforce classroom expectations and norms within the room through the use of logical consequences.
  • Implement small group lesson plans provided by the teacher and/or plan engaging small group lessons for reading and/or math
  • Plans games for Crew and recess time to engage kids in cooperative learning and problem solving
  • Engage in regular data collection and assist in administering assessments
  • Make families welcome, know them well, engage them actively in the life of the school, and communicate regularly with them.
  • Make use of effective classroom management practices and communicate challenges and celebrations with parents
  • Participate in strong professional culture that is sustained via collective leadership and action.
  • Observe and support the Odyssey staff community courtesies and Habits.
  • Work with Adventure Director and Crew Lead Teacher to schedule, plan, and support facilitation of two overnight trips per year, as well as a variety of Adventure days throughout the year, and coordinate parent chaperones.
  • Attend and participate in all Staff Council and professional development meetings. Avoid scheduling conferences, medical appointments, etc. during these times.
  • Be prompt for school, meeting and supervision responsibilities.
