About The Position

Nature of the Work Self-directed courses are a new experiential learning approach at the University of Ottawa, aligned with the uOCompétences framework and inspired by the SLICC model at the University of Edinburgh. Each teaching assistant (TA) will play a key coaching role for up to 25 students, guiding them in the planning, implementation, and critical reflection of their individual project. This role is primarily mentoring and formative in nature.

Nature du travail Les cours auto-dirigés constituent une nouvelle formule d’apprentissage expérientiel à l’Université d’Ottawa, alignée sur le cadre uOCompétences et inspirée du modèle SLICC à l’Université d’Édimbourg. Chaque assistant·e d’enseignement (AE) jouera un rôle clé d’accompagnateur·trice auprès d’un maximum de 25 étudiant·e·s, les guidant dans la planification, la mise en œuvre et la réflexion critique de leur projet individuel. Ce rôle est de nature principalement mentorale et formative.

Requirements

• Oral and written bilingualism (French and English).
• Relevant training or experience in student support or professional development.
• Bilinguisme oral et écrit (français et anglais).
• Formation ou expérience pertinente en accompagnement d’étudiant·e·s ou en développement professionnel.

• Good understanding of experiential learning or the uOCompétences framework (an asset).
• Experience in mentoring, tutoring, CO-OP, or career development roles at uOttawa (an asset).
• Bonne compréhension de l’apprentissage expérientiel ou du cadre uOCompétences (un atout).
• Expérience dans des rôles de mentorat, de tutorat, en COOP ou au sein du développement de carrière à uOttawa (un atout).

Responsibilities

• Start-up Workshop (5 hours): Co-facilitate an introductory workshop on self-directed courses and the uOCompétences framework.
• Personalized Support: Support students in defining, planning, and implementing their experiential learning project. Offer five individual mentoring sessions (2.5 hours/student).
• Evaluation of deliverables: Read and comment on three deliverables: proposal, interim report, final report (2.5 hours/student).
• Active participation: Attend regular coordination meetings with the supervising professor (approximately 10 hours). Participate in course evaluation mechanisms (reflective journal, survey, focus group).
• Required training: Complete a brief training course on the self-directed approach, reflective learning, and experiential mentoring.
• Atelier de lancement (5 h) : Co-animer un atelier introductif sur les cours auto-dirigés et le cadre uOCompétences.
• Encadrement personnalisé : Soutenir les étudiant·e·s dans la définition, la planification et la réalisation de leur projet d’apprentissage expérientiel. Offrir cinq rencontres de mentorat individuelles (2,5 h/étudiant·e).
• Évaluation des livrables: Lire et commenter trois livrables : proposition, rapport intermédiaire, rapport final (2,5 h/étudiant·e).
• Participation active: Assister aux rencontres régulières de coordination avec le professeur responsable (environ 10 h). Participer aux mécanismes d’évaluation du cours (journal réflexif, sondage, groupe de discussion).
• Formation requise : Suivre une brève formation sur la formule auto-dirigée, l’apprentissage réflexif et le mentorat expérientiel.
