About The Position

The Maryland Department of Juvenile Services is seeking passionate and compassionate education professionals to join their team at local government youth education facilities. This role offers the opportunity to make a profound difference in the lives of vulnerable youth by providing guidance, support, and education to help them overcome obstacles and unlock their full potential. Educators will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of youth and contributing to community betterment, working in a supportive and mission-driven environment. Retired educators are encouraged to apply. This is a twelve (12)-month position that observes state and federal holidays, with no winter or summer breaks. The incumbent provides direct services to youth detained in a juvenile detention facility and must maintain a consistent work schedule to ensure safety, supervision, and continuity of care for the youth population served.

Requirements

  • Possession of appropriate educational credentials as determined by the Maryland State Board of Education.
  • Must possess a MSDE Secondary Education Educator License.
  • Teachers in State operated school programs are required to acquire and maintain certification to teach in the State of Maryland per Education Article, Section 6-101 of the Annotated Code and Code of Maryland Regulations (COMAR) 13A.12.01.03B(2).
  • Applicants recommended for appointment will be required to complete an Authorization and Verification of Credentials.
  • Additional educational credits beyond the Advanced Professional Certificate must meet the following criteria established by the Institutional Educators Pay Plan Committee in order to qualify for application toward the APC plus 30 (60) levels.
  • Credits must be beyond the education level held at the time the educational requirements for the Advanced Professional Certificate were met and must either relate to the current job responsibilities or be part of an employer approved program of study.
  • Credits mean semester hours from a regionally accredited college or university or Maryland State Department of Education approved workshops.
  • No more than one half of any additional credits applied to these criteria may be earned through Maryland Department of Education approved workshops.
  • Employees in this classification are subject to Substance Abuse Testing as outlined in Code of Maryland Regulation (COMAR) 17.04.09.
  • As part of the hiring process, applicants must consent to State Police and Child Protective Services (CPS) investigations/background checks.
  • Proof of eligibility to work in the United States, as required by the Immigration Reform and Control Act, must be provided upon hire.
  • Employment is contingent upon obtaining at least a Conditional Maryland Teaching Certificate.

Nice To Haves

  • Active licensure in one or more of the following content areas: English, Social Studies, Science, Mathematics, ESOL, Career and Technical Education (CTE), or School Counseling.
  • A minimum of one year of teaching experience, which may include internship experience.
  • Current active certification issued by the Maryland State Department of Education.
