About The Position

The Special Education Teacher position at the Department of Justice is responsible for implementing educational programs for individuals with special learning needs within a correctional facility. The role focuses on developing and maintaining curricula in various subjects, assessing student progress, and ensuring a secure environment while fostering successful reentry into the community. This position requires a commitment to educational excellence and the ability to adapt teaching methods to meet diverse student needs.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution with supervised student teaching.
  • At least one course in general psychology, human development, history/philosophy of education, and teaching methods.
  • For secondary positions, at least 24 semester hours in principal fields of instruction.
  • At least 24 semester hours in special education, including courses on teaching exceptional students.
  • For GL-07: One year of graduate level education or superior academic achievement.
  • For GL-09: Two years of progressively higher-level graduate education or a master's degree.
  • Experience teaching special needs students and developing individualized lesson plans.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in teaching remedial subjects to meet special needs.
  • Experience in preparing and presenting lessons for special needs students.
  • Experience in maintaining student records and ensuring special learning needs are addressed.

Responsibilities

  • Implement overall remedial reading, language arts, science, social studies, and/or math curriculums.
  • Maintain life skills, study strategies, and cognitive strategy programs.
  • Design new programs to meet special needs and place students into prescribed programs.
  • Interview and evaluate prospective special learning needs students.
  • Administer individualized formal and informal diagnostic tests.
  • Maintain accurate records of student progress and redesign programs as necessary.
  • Collaborate with correctional institution staff to maintain security.
