About The Position

The Teacher, Social Worker position is a candidate pool for the 2025-2026 school year at Minneapolis Public Schools. This role involves promoting and supporting students' academic and social success by acting as a vital link among the school, home, and community. School Social Workers (SSWs) provide direct services to students and their families, including individual service, group work, classroom presentations, crisis intervention, and consultation. They also participate in the evaluation process for special education students and collaborate with teachers and administrators. The position requires a commitment to diversity and the ability to connect with students from various backgrounds.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Social Work.
  • Currently licensed in Minnesota to practice as a social worker under the Board of Social Work.
  • Two years of professional social work experience with children, youth, and families.
  • Supervised practicum experiences with children and youth.

Nice To Haves

  • Master's degree in Social Work.
  • Knowledge of principles, practices, and ethical standards of social work.
  • Knowledge of laws, codes, and regulations related to assignments.
  • Knowledge of community resources and programs available to clients.
  • Experience with multi-tiered evidence-based interventions.

Responsibilities

  • Perform special education due process related duties and responsibilities.
  • Provide direct social/emotional skill service to special education students.
  • Contact parents of special education students regarding meetings and due process rights.
  • Assist special education team members with due process timelines.
  • Provide direct social/emotional evidence-based and culturally responsive intervention for students.
  • Facilitate social skills groups.
  • Collaborate with community mental health providers and case managers.
  • Connect students and families with basic needs resources.
  • Provide individual and group support for students and families around issues of grief and loss, trauma, and suicide ideation.
  • Prepare Child Protective Services referrals reporting abuse and neglect concerns.
  • Collaborate with the Homeless and Highly Mobile Students program.
  • Implement attendance interventions and support.
  • Participate in building leadership School Support Teams/Response To Intervention/data teams.
  • Coordinate for 504 law accommodations plans.
  • Intervene in student alcohol/drug issues.
  • Support and facilitate Gay Straight Alliance groups.
  • Maintain absolute confidentiality of work-related issues.
