About The Position

Provides a special day class program for children who meet eligibility criteria for special education serving students with severely handicapping conditions. Develops and implements an individualized program according to the Individual Education Plan for each student that addresses academic, language, communication, and behavioral instruction with a classroom setting.

Requirements

  • Possession of a Special Secondary Credential –Mentally Retarded or Exceptional Children Credential—Mentally Retarded or Teaching Credential with Minor—Mentally Retarded or Restricted Special Education Credential—Trainable Mentally Retarded Limited Specialized Preparation Credential—Mentally Retarded or Specialist Credential in Special Education—Severely Handicapped or Moderate to Severe Credential and demonstrated experience and/or training in an assigned position.

Responsibilities

  • Instructs students with learning disabilities and/or developmental delays, using appropriate techniques, equipment, instructional materials, and supplies in accordance with the individualized education program for each student.
  • Develops and implements short and long range goals in academics, language, communication, behavior, and other priority areas of need, which remediate those specific needs.
  • Provides academic as well as therapeutic interventions for specific remediation.
  • Evaluates student performances, keeps up-to-date records of individual student progress, and recommends revision of the I.E.P. as appropriate; modifies I.E.P. accordingly.
  • Works closely with other special education staff members, e.g. psychologists, program specialist, speech therapist, and adaptive physical education teacher in the assessment process, program development, and in the implementation of the I.E.P. IEP
  • Takes responsibility for providing for the successful integration of students into regular program, thereby communicating regularly with the regular education staff.
  • Communicates with parents as necessary as a means of effectively coordinating the efforts of the school and the home in the improvement of the overall program for the student.
  • Establishes and maintains standards of behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in the classroom.
  • Maintains an effective, attractive learning environment in which positive self-image and self-help activities are stressed.
  • Assists in the educational diagnostic assessment of identified pupils.
  • Develops an individual education program for each pupil on an annual basis.
  • Directs the activities and duties of instructional aides.
  • Other duties as assigned.
