About The Position

The certified teacher of visually impaired students works with students with visual impairments that attend their home school and other educational sites. The vision itinerant teacher will provide direct services per the IEP process to students with an identified visual impairment, serve as a resource to school personnel, evaluate students referred through appropriate channels, and promote interest in and an understanding of the implications of a visual impairment. This position will be responsible for supporting the preparation of future educators by collaborating with ISU and hosting pre-service teachers.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Education; Specialist in Low Vision and Blindness
  • Professional Educator License
  • UEB Certification
  • Demonstrates competent Braille and Assistive Technology skills
  • Demonstrates a firm knowledge in Expanded Core Curriculum.

Nice To Haves

  • 1-3 years' experience as a Teacher of Students with Visual Impairments
  • Experience managing an itinerant caseload
  • Ability to collaborate with a variety of educational professionals, including local school districts, parents, laboratory school staff, and ISU staff and students
  • Experience administering Functional Vision and Learning Media Assessments
  • Ability to access print materials and format them into Braille or read to students
  • Awareness of assistive technology specific to individuals who are blind or have low vision and possess the ability to inform teams and instruct students
  • Good organization and communication skills to effectively collaborate with team members
  • Knowledge of Expanded Core Curriculum and ability to create lessons appropriate to the learner's needs
  • Experience working with students with cortical/cerebral visual impairment
  • Experience supporting teachers in the differentiation of instruction and use of accommodations
  • Ability to develop student IEPs, including goals and objectives, supplementary aids and services.
