About The Position

This position involves carrying out the professional duties of a teacher in a post-primary school, under the reasonable direction of the Principal. The role encompasses a wide range of responsibilities including planning and preparing lessons, teaching pupils according to their educational needs, and assessing their progress. A key aspect is promoting the general well-being of pupils, providing advice and guidance on educational and social matters, and communicating with parents and external bodies. The teacher is also expected to participate in staff development, review teaching methods, and contribute to the school's curriculum and pastoral arrangements. Maintaining discipline and ensuring the health and safety of pupils, both on school premises and during authorized activities, is paramount. The role also includes administrative tasks, participation in public examinations, and contributing to the professional development of other teachers. The position is full-time, requiring availability for 195 days per year, with specific teaching hour limits and a daily break.

Requirements

  • Hold a teaching qualification which meets the requirements for recognition to teach in grant-aided schools in Northern Ireland.
  • Hold a degree or equivalent Level 6 qualification which has prepared the applicant to teach Physical Education as his/her main subject.
  • Minimum of two years’ demonstrable experience of teaching Boys PE at Key Stage 3 and 4 to achieve positive learning outcomes.
  • Minimum of one years' demonstrable experience of teaching Sports Leadership (Occupational Studies) at Key Stage 4 to achieve positive learning outcomes.
  • Minimum of two years' demonstrable experience of teaching Science at Key Stage 3 to achieve positive learning outcomes.
  • Be registered with the General Teaching Council for Northern Ireland (GTCNI) before taking up post.
  • Knowledge of Northern Ireland Curriculum.
  • Knowledge and understanding of Safeguarding and Child Protection policy/practice.
  • Knowledge of the SEND Code of Practice.
  • Knowledge of a range of teaching strategies to meet the learning needs of pupils.
  • Knowledge of Information Technology systems such as digital classroom tools/media and the use of tablets/mobile technologies.
  • Knowledge of current assessment methods to inform teaching.
  • Effective teaching and classroom management skills to inspire and challenge pupils to raise achievement.
  • Proven ability to provide a supportive, inclusive learning environment.
  • Ability to work collaboratively to promote positive relationships with pupils, colleagues, parents and the wider community.
  • Ability to work as an effective member of a team, and to motivate self and others.

Responsibilities

  • Exercise general professional duties under the reasonable direction of the principal or employing board.
  • Perform particular duties as reasonably assigned by the principal or board.
  • Plan and prepare courses and lessons.
  • Teach pupils according to their educational needs, including setting and marking work.
  • Assess, record, and report on the development, progress, and attainment of pupils.
  • Promote the general progress and well-being of individual pupils and groups.
  • Provide advice and guidance to pupils on educational, social, further education, and career matters.
  • Make records and reports on pupils' personal and social needs (unless compromising own position).
  • Communicate and consult with parents.
  • Communicate and cooperate with approved external persons or bodies.

  • Provide or contribute to oral and written assessments, reports, and references for pupils (unless compromising own position).

  • Advise and cooperate with the Principal and other teachers on curriculum, teaching materials, programmes, methods, assessment, and pastoral arrangements.
  • Maintain good order and discipline among pupils and safeguard their health and safety on school premises and during authorized school activities elsewhere.
  • Participate in school meetings related to curriculum, administration, or organization.
  • Participate in arrangements for preparing pupils for public examinations, assessing pupils for examinations, recording and reporting assessments, and supervising during examinations.
  • Contribute to the selection and professional development of other teachers, including induction and assessment of probationary teachers.
  • Coordinate or manage the work of other teachers.
  • Take part in the review, development, and management of activities related to curriculum, organization, and pastoral functions.
  • Participate in administrative and organizational tasks, including managing/supervising support staff and ordering/allocating equipment.
  • Attend assemblies.
  • Register pupil attendance and supervise pupils before, during, or after school sessions.
  • Be available for work on 195 days in any year, with not more than 190 days involving teaching children in a classroom situation.
  • Be available to perform duties for 1,265 hours in any year, exclusive of time spent off school premises for preparation/marking and travel.
  • Supervise and teach pupils whose teacher is not available, with specific conditions regarding school size and duration of absence.
