About The Position

The A.R. Gould School located within the Long Creek Youth Development Center in South Portland, Maine seeks a Special Education Teacher to join their dynamic team. This is a year-round, 224-day position. Primary responsibility of this position will be to provide evidence based instructional practices and special education support of various high school subjects to students detained within the Long Creek Youth Development Center, assisting students in their continuing education towards obtaining a high school diploma or GED.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of department functions, objectives, policies and programs.
  • Knowledge of teaching principles, practices methods and techniques.
  • Knowledge of human behavior and performance and individual differences in ability, personality, interests, learning and motivation.
  • Knowledge of adult and juvenile learning principles, practices methods and techniques.
  • Knowledge of curriculum development, classroom instruction, and educational planning in special education.
  • Ability to assess student needs and develop/modify instruction as necessary to support the growth and abilities of all students.
  • Ability to develop curriculum and lesson plans.
  • Ability to prepare clear and concise written reports.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Ability to work effectively as an individual and as part of a team.
  • Ability to work with and manage at-risk youth.
  • A Bachelor's Degree in Education or a related field.
  • Certificate for appropriate subject and/or grade(s) as issued by the Department of Education: Special Education - 282

Responsibilities

  • Assessing the level of functioning of all students.
  • IEP development and implementation.
  • Consulting with regular education teachers on IEP modifications and student needs.
  • Coordination work with other schools the student may be transferred to or from.
  • Conduction pre-and post-tests when applicable.
  • Maintaining sources of data collection.
  • Managing student records in a timely and appropriate manner.
  • Participating in staff development activities.
  • Working with others to address and resolve student issues.
  • Serves as a role mode while managing student behavior.
  • Helps locate, order and promote materials to improve reading instruction.
