About The Position

The Teacher is responsible for the daily operations of the Center-based Head Start classroom, including teaching and related operations. This role requires adherence to Federal Head Start Performance Standards and State guidelines. The Teacher ensures a safe, healthy, and developmentally appropriate learning environment, monitors enrollment and attendance, and participates in lesson planning and activity implementation. They work as a team member with parents and staff to individualize child development activities, conduct observations, and maintain child and family files. The Teacher also develops collaborative relationships with parents and community resources, assists with enrollment, and assumes supervisory duties in the absence of the Lead Teacher. Participation in parent and staff meetings is also required.

Requirements

  • Ability to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
  • Thorough understanding of the culture and the needs of the Tribes of the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta region.
  • Strong written, oral, organizational, computer and analytical skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in rural bilingual and intercultural programs.
  • Demonstrated commitment and respect for the health and welfare of young children and families.
  • Must be able to travel in and out of region as required in small aircraft and to use the Head Start Center for lodging when traveling.
  • Must pass a Physical Examination, TB test and criminal records background check.
  • Past or present Head Start parent.
  • Must be a minimum of nineteen (19) years of age.
  • High School Diploma or GED

Responsibilities

  • Ensures that the Head Start learning environment is safe, healthy, and includes developmentally appropriate activities and materials for the Head Start enrolled children following the Health & Safety standards.
  • Ensures that the Head Start program offers learning experiences and choices for children’s development in all the following areas: Physical, Social/Emotional, Cognitive, Communication, Creative, and Spiritual, literacy, math, social studies and science
  • Monitors enrollment and attendance to maintain maximum class size and an average 85% average daily attendance.
  • Participates in lesson planning, developing materials and the implementation of activities in the classroom.
  • Participates in necessary clean-up and set-up activities to keep the environment neat, tidy, aesthetically pleasing and inviting to children.
  • Participates as a team member with parents and staff to develop activities that are individualized to meet the child’s needs by conducting required screenings, assessments, staffing, parent conferences, and home visits.
  • Conducts child observations and keep Child and Family files up-to-date.
  • Conducts regularly scheduled parent-teacher conferences and when necessary, conducts extra home visits and/or conferences with parents.
  • Develops collaborative relationships with parents and community resources to meet the needs of children and families.
  • Participates in enrollment of Head Start children and families throughout the year.
  • Assumes duties including supervisory and problem-solving responsibilities in the absence of the Lead Teacher.
  • Attends Parent Committee Meetings, Parent Education programs and other parent activities or delegates this responsibility on an individual basis to other staff members.
  • Attends and participates in weekly staff meetings and regularly scheduled supervision meetings.
  • Must be willing to travel and attend workshops.
  • Works as a team member with other local staff to keep the local program in compliance with Head Start Performance Standards and State, local, Tribal laws, rules and regulations.
  • Learns all classroom emergency, health and sanitation procedures for children and adults; models those procedures and accept emergency responsibilities.
  • Completes written observations on children each day.
  • Maintains strict confidentiality of the Head Start Program.
