About The Position

Responsible for the educational development of each child in the class in accordance with established curriculum per Head Start Program Performance Standards, philosophy and mission.

Requirements

  • High School graduate or GED.
  • Associate’s Degree in Child Development (CD)/Early Childhood Education (ECE) or related field with a minimum of twenty-four (24) CD/ECE units required.
  • Two (2) adult supervision units or enroll/complete within the first twelve (12) months of employment required.
  • Twelve (12) working months of pre-school teaching experience required.
  • Effective presentation, written and verbal communication skills.
  • Maintain a valid California driver’s license, reliable transportation, adequate auto insurance as required by State law, and insurability by agency carrier for those driving agency vehicles.
  • Proof of insurance will be required.
  • Obtain a valid AB 1207 Mandated Reporter Certification within the first three (3) days of employment.
  • Pass and maintain Basic Pest Management in a Child Care Settings annual certification as required by the California Healthy Schools Act (HSA) within 60 days of employment.
  • Physical examination, TB screening clearance and signed federal criminal record declaration are required within 7 days after employment.
  • Immunized against influenza (flu), pertussis (whooping cough) and measles.
  • Pass required reference checks and fingerprint clearance under Title 22 regulations: Department of Justice/FBI, Criminal Record Statement Child Abuse Central Index (CACI) and background investigation as needed prior to employment.
  • Infant/Child CPR/First Aid certification with at least 15 hours of training on preventive health practices required within 6 months of employment.

Nice To Haves

  • Bilingual in English and Spanish/Hmong/Lao or other secondary language may be required based on the needs of the clients and the program.
  • Former Head Start 0 to 5 parents preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Serves as classroom teacher to facilitate each child’s growth in the key areas of social, emotional and cognitive development and cultural awareness by assessing each child’s development and developing a program of study, which meets the child’s individual needs.
  • Completion of assessments on an on-going basis.
  • Preparation of an individualized plan for each child based on assessments and observations of the child.
  • Conferring with each parent three times throughout the year to discuss his/her child’s growth and development, and establish school readiness goals.
  • Ensuring that the special needs of children with disabilities are being met appropriately. This includes active involvement in implementing goals noted in the child’s Individual Education Plan (IEP) or Special Services Plan (SSP).
  • Provides a safe and healthy environment as required by Community Care Licensing regulations and Head Start Program Performance Standards.
  • Provides appropriate visual supervision of children at all times.
  • Creates an inviting and stimulating learning environment in an appropriately clean, healthy and safe condition with regular parent input.
  • Directly supervises and evaluates the assigned Teacher Assistant(s).
  • Assists with the supervision of the other Teacher Assistant(s) in regard to their classroom performance.
  • Trains the assigned Teacher Assistant(s), allowing and encouraging participation in activity planning and program implementation with input from supervisor. Encourages the Teacher Assistant(s) to learn and participate in all classroom, record-keeping and planning procedures.
  • Posts a Weekly Activity Plan the Friday before use, in accordance with Fresno EOC Head Start’s curriculum.
  • Makes required home visits to each child’s home at indicated periods during the school year, one of which must be prior to child entering program.
  • Prepares required records accurately and submit reports as required in a timely manner.
  • Assist in the preparation, service and clean-up of meals and snacks.
  • Serves as a bus monitor, as assigned.
  • Serves as a substitute for other Teacher’s classrooms as needed.
  • Occasionally will be required to work at additional centers/classrooms outside of regularly assigned classroom/center.
  • Attends and participates in conferences, meetings and trainings, as required.
  • Participates in IEP process for all Head Start children.
  • Adheres to the American with Disabilities Act (ADA-2010) which prohibits discriminatory actions toward children and/or adult with disabilities. In particular, children with disabilities are enrolled in the classroom as mandated by Federal Law.
  • Maintains strict compliance with universal precautions in the classroom or during home visits and when administering first aid.
  • Maintains confidentiality of records and information on Early Head Start/Head Start staff, children and families.
  • Promote parent/family engagement in various program activities, such as volunteering in the classroom, family/child home activities, attending program workshops & meetings, etc.
  • Responsible for supervising assigned staff, interns and volunteers; recruitment, performance management and other personnel processes.
  • Models professionalism for staff, parents, children, clients, and community members. Promotes a collaborative environment within the service areas, program, and agency.
  • Travels for agency business using reliable transportation.
  • Maintains regular attendance and punctuality.
  • May work evenings and weekends as required.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
