  • Requires a valid South Carolina teaching certificate or eligibility for South Carolina teaching certificate in the appropriate certified area.

Responsibilities

  • Ensures that ELs are enrolled following federal, state and district policy- to include the following: prompt requests for transfers of records (within 10 days of enrollment), if necessary, completion of the Home Language Survey administration of any placement tests (K W-APT or WIDA Screener).
  • Helps parents and families of non-English speaking backgrounds access any necessary and appropriate translation/interpretation services as described by district policy and expectations
  • Advocates for the equal, fair and respectful treatment of all ELs and their families within the educational setting and community at-large.
  • Advises for careful scheduling of ELs to receive mainstream academics as well as appropriate ESOL services as described by district instructional models.
  • Partners and communicates with mainstream teachers to document classroom modifications and accommodations, grades, attendance and other academic or personal needs of ELs.
  • Supports mainstream classroom teachers’ access to resources, best-practices, strategies and student data necessary to meet the needs of ELs in their classroom.
  • Provides ESOL Instructional Assistants with a schedule of duties and responsibilities within the appropriate time-frame annually.
  • Plans and delivers ESOL lessons based on state and district instructional models- including the following: WIDA standards framework, ELD standards and model performance indicators (MPIs).
  • Ensures that appropriate modifications and accommodations for ELs are- determined by teachers, parents and administration within necessary time-frames, documented for each EL on their individual IMAP, and implemented routinely in all classroom and testing environments.
  • Conducts and documents, annually, multiple school-based professional developments for faculty and staff and two (by semester) cluster-based parent orientation meetings.
  • Informs faculty and staff of the laws concerning ELs- especially with regards to- translations/communicating with parents, accommodations and modifications, and state, federal, and district instructional models and accountability measures.
  • Participates in routine professional development necessary to retain an up-to-date understanding of- all laws and policies that affect ELs classroom practices that meet the requirements of state and district instructional models.
  • Schedules and completes the annual WIDA ACCESS for ELs 2.0 within the appropriate time-frames for all ELs who have not exited ESOL service based on state criteria.
  • Monitors routinely the mainstream academic performance and progress of served, waived and exited ELs- including completion of district monitoring documentation.
  • Updates ESOL Blue Folders/permanent records within the appropriate time-frames- including- distribution of parent notifications and annual waivers (if applicable), updates of placement and monitoring forms.
  • Guarantees that digital and hard-copy records of ELs are accurate and reflect up-to-date federal, state and district policy- including but not limited to- state guidelines pertaining to the non-duplication of documents, the Home Language Survey, PowerSchool coding, ELL service models and the requirements of the ESOL Blue Folders.
  • Plans a program of study that meets the needs, interests and abilities of students.
  • May teach multiple disciplines as assigned.
  • Creates a classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of the students.
  • Plans and prepares lesson plans and related activities for individual students or assigned classes.
  • Guides the learning process toward achievement of curriculum goals; establishes clear objectives for all lessons, units, projects, etc., and communicates these objectives to students.
  • Employs a variety of instructional techniques and media consistent with the physical limitations of the location provided and the needs and capabilities of students involved.
  • Grades work completed by students; maintains accurate records of test scores / grades.
  • Assesses the accomplishments of students on a regular basis and provides progress reports as required.
  • Reports suspected learning and other disabilities to District specialist(s) as appropriate.
  • Maintains accurate, complete and up-to-date records as required by law, District policy and administrative regulation.
  • Assists the school administration in implementing all policies and rules governing student life and conduct; develops reasonable rules of classroom behavior and procedure and maintains order in the classroom in a fair and just manner.
  • Monitors the activities/behavior of the student body as scheduled to ensure student safety and well-being.
  • Assists individual students in need of special attention.
  • Supervises the work of teaching assistants and/or volunteers.
  • Maintains positive relationships with parents; schedules and conducts parent-teacher conferences; facilitates parent education workshops and conducts home visits as necessary.
  • Maintains inventory of classroom supplies and equipment; prepares supply requisitions as needed.
  • Coordinates and/or participates in special programs, projects or events as required; serves as adviser to student organizations, staffs and committees as appropriate.
  • Attends staff meetings and serves on various staff committees as required.
  • Participates in staff in-service training and continuing education as required.
  • Makes arrangements for substitute instructors as needed.
  • Operates various types of machinery and equipment including a computer, printer, copier, laminating machine, fax machine, audio-visual equipment, tape player, various curriculum-specific equipment or instruments, etc.
  • May provide remedial assistance to individuals, small groups or entire classes of students as scheduled during or after regular school hours.
  • Maintains a clean and orderly classroom.
  • Performs related duties as required.
