About The Position

The Teacher Special Education Early Childhood Special Education (ECSE) will provide instruction in academic, behavior, communication, independent living, social and personal care skills to students with disabilities using a variety of teaching techniques, materials and equipment. The incumbent will provide a range of services available for children who are ages 3-5. The ECSE program generally serves students with significant cognitive, behavioral, communication, and/or physical disabilities. The students may require full assistance to care for their daily needs.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Education or related field.
  • Valid Teaching Certification Issued by Texas Education Agency appropriate to subject and grade level of assignment or demonstrate competency through the state's Texas Content Competency Worksheet (TCCW) or has received statement of eligibility.
  • Valid Special Education Certification EC-12, or Special Education Specialist Certification EC-12.
  • De-Escalation/Restraint Certification (CPI) preferred or required to obtain once hired (district-provided training).
  • Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) training required within one year of hire date.
  • Ability to plan and implement lessons based on needs and abilities of students.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with students, peers and parents.
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of appropriate technology equipment and software programs.
  • Proven ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional programs.

Responsibilities

  • Work collaboratively with parents, students, and school/community personnel in the development of clear, measurable Individual Educational Plan (IEP) goals and objectives that are aligned with the Texas Pre-Kindergarten Guidelines.
  • Apply knowledge of human development and disabilities to plan and implement appropriate curriculum with appropriate accommodations, modifications and adaptations.
  • Document ongoing student progress, retain and maintain accurate records, including but not limited to support and service logs, regular data collection on IEP targets and behavior (skill development and mastery) and progress updates.
  • Administer and analyze student assessment appropriately, including but not limited to district testing and informal criterion-referenced assessments.
  • Develop Present Levels of Academic And Functional Performance (PLAAFP) and annual goals/objectives based on the results of administered student assessments.
  • Prepare, organize and implement lesson plans that are developmentally and age-appropriate based on student IEPs, including behavior intervention plans and accommodations/modifications of materials and curriculum.
  • Use appropriate adaptive and assistive technology as documented in the ARD and/or recommended by related service providers to facilitate learning, communication, mobility and positioning.
  • Execute behavioral strategies as indicated in students' ARD documents (e.g., reinforcements, consequences, contingencies). Intervene using a continuum of behavior intervention strategies, up to and including approved physical restraint when student is in danger of harming self or others.
  • Under the supervision of the nurse, provide school health services, such as G-Tube feedings, administering medications, etc.
  • Assist students with personal care services (e.g., feeding cleaning, dressing, lifting, positioning, transitioning, toileting, changing) - may be more than 50% of the work day.
  • Conduct instructional or other professional activities consistent with the requirements of state and federal laws.
  • Safeguard confidentiality with regard to students with disabilities.
  • Prepare paperwork for and participate in Admission, Review and Dismissal (ARD) meetings.
  • Participate in appropriate on-campus and off-campus professional development activities as required or assigned.
