About the position

The position involves providing educational services to incarcerated students in specialized housing units (SAU/BAU) starting on August 10, 2025. The educator will teach academic classes as assigned, which may include ABE, PreASE, and/or ASE, covering subjects such as Reading, Language, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies. The role requires utilizing research-based practices and current instructional methods to ensure effective instruction in a correctional setting. Responsibilities include maintaining student attendance, updating case plans, administering standardized testing, and managing educational documentation. The educator will also engage with the Education Division and administration staff to deliver specialized instruction and maintain a professional environment while adhering to institutional rules.

Responsibilities

  • Provide educational services to incarcerated students in specialized housing units (SAU/BAU)
  • Teach academic classes as assigned by supervisor including ABE, PreASE and/or ASE
  • Utilize research-based practices and current instructional methods for effective instruction
  • Interact with an adult incarcerated population with possible medical, psychosocial, or educational deficits
  • Work with the Education Division and administration staff to deliver specialized instruction
  • Complete student attendance daily and update case plans as required by SOP
  • Complete required 40 hours of training within the fiscal year and maintain a current teaching license
  • Administer standardized testing to students including TABE, TABE CLAS-E, HiSET and HiSET qualifying exams
  • Maintain student education files and perform monthly purges
  • Track EGT for academic and vocational boosts
  • Identify and recruit potential incarcerated individual class participants
  • Schedule incarcerated individuals for academic testing and determine appropriate placement
  • Maintain and review educational program waitlists
  • Address all Case Plan referrals to academic and vocational programming within 30 days
  • Utilize current educational assessments to provide educational instruction
  • Maintain a record of professional development and DOC trainings attended
  • Illustrate knowledge of DOC policies and procedures
  • Engage in Division priorities to enhance strategic goals
  • Interact and communicate with staff and inmates professionally
  • Report any security-related matters to supervisor promptly
  • Manage assigned classroom in accordance with institutional rules
  • Perform any other duties assigned

Requirements

  • Possession of appropriate Teacher's Certificate issued by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education
  • Ability to work with inmates, teaching staff, and administration
  • Experience teaching content (ABE, ESL, PreASE, and/or ASE)
  • Experience teaching adult learners

Nice-to-haves

  • Knowledge of principles, methods, and practices in adult education
  • Working knowledge of educational tests and assessments
